PHNOM PENH: Cambodia has discovered a new outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu in the eastern province of Kompong Cham, according to the government. In a report filed by the Agriculture Ministry to Prime Minister Hun Sen, a copy of which was seen on Saturday, it said 200 chickens were found dead in Koh Svay village.

The report dated Friday said the chickens were found on Nov 28, and based on samples tested on Wednesday, it was confirmed that they had succumbed to the H5N1 bird flu virus, which can be fatal to humans. The report said authorities had taken precautions in the area. Cambodia reported its last bird flu outbreak in January this year with the deaths of some 300 chickens and ducks in the eastern province of Svay Rieng.

Bird flu outbreaks have had a human cost in the past ? 14 Cambodians died during one in 2013 ? but no human cases have been detected in Koh Svay village so far, according to Ministry of Health spokesman Ly Sovann. In a Facebook post, Sovann warned people to avoid eating or selling poultry that dies under mysterious circumstances and to maintain hygiene practices.
World Health Organization Cambodia spokeswoman Vicky Houssiere said the body is assisting the ministry with the outbreak.
Kim Sour Phirun, head of Kampong Cham?s Health Department, said authorities are checking nearby health centres for patients with symptoms of H5N1.

PAHPO tasked district veterinarians with verifying the cases. During that time, district veterinarians collected four samples on chicken from the farm and sent them to the National Animal Health and Production Research Institute (NAHPRI) to confirm the diagnosis in a laboratory. Officials checking if bird flu killed chickens

About 30 chickens became sick and died in Kampong Cham?s Chamkar Leu district and authorities do not yet know the reason because the owners of the chickens only reported the incident after they buried their dead birds.

Chamkar Ler district?s Chey Yo commune police chief Sar Chamreoun told Khmer Times on Thursday that about 30 chickens in Trapaing Russey village fell sick and died from Monday to Wednesday and were buried before their deaths were reported to local authorities.

[TD]On 21/12/2017, poultry owners in Tropang Russey village reported high morbidity and mortality of chickens. Three samples of backyard chickens which died suddenly were collected by a district veterinarian and sent to the National Animal Heath and Production Research Institute (NAHPRI) for laboratory diagnosis and confirmation. On 22/12/2017, the laboratory result confirmed the positivity to H5N1 avian influenza virus. All susceptible poultry birds in the infected premises have been culled.[/TD]
