Govt warns public to guard against dengue

AUTHORITIES are warning the public to take extra precautions against dengue fever as the Kingdom heads into the rainy season ? when the risk of contracting the potentially deadly mosquito-borne disease is at its highest.

Ngan Chantha, director of the National Anti-Dengue Programme at the Ministry of Health, said officials launched a campaign on Tuesday to raise public awareness of dengue fever.

?We want to remind people throughout the country to prevent dengue fever, even though the number of cases this year has not been high,? he said.

There have been 731 individual cases through May 17, marking a drop from the more than 1,000 cases recorded during the same period last year, Ngan Chantha said. Four deaths have been recorded this year.

However, the country records the vast majority of its yearly dengue cases and fatalities during the rainy months, when dengue-carrying mosquitoes have plenty of opportunity to breed in water.

Last year, authorities said 11,625 children under 15, the group most affected by the disease, contracted dengue. Of those, 36 died.

Officials plan to distribute 102 tonnes of Abate, a mosquito larvicide, in concert with the campaign, Ngan Chantha said.

Phnom Penh residents will be reminded to sleep under mosquito nets, wear long shirts and destroy mosquito habitats around their homes, said Sok Sokun, director of the municipal health department.

Health Minister Mam Bunheng also urged the public to be cautious.

?I want to suggest to all people to protect themselves, especially their children, from dengue fever,? he said, and warned that dengue cases could rise if prevention measures are not implemented.

?Clean the house. Kill mosquitoes. Sleep under mosquito nets and wear long shirts,? he said.

PHNOM PENH, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Dengue fever cases this year have more than halved compared to the first six months of 2009, local media reported on Wednesday, citing officials of Health Ministry.

However, health officials warn that more dengue infections are likely during the forthcoming rainy season, which is arriving late.

Seven people died in the first five and a half months of this year, the same toll as last year, but reported infections have decreased in the same period from 2,431 to 1,111, the ministry's dengue control program director Ngan Chantha was quoted by the Cambodia Daily as saying.

"The number has decreased, but we are calling on people to remain careful with the breeding of mosquitoes during the rainy season," Chantha said.

"From the 21st to 22nd week, the jump in cases is quite high," Chantha said, noting there were 242 cases in week 22. "We should be vigilant because July is a highly vulnerable month."

The decrease in dengue fever cases is due to the delayed rainy season, increased public awareness and health care system improvements, said Hai Ra, head of dengue control at Kompong Cham provincial health department.

In the first 21 weeks of this year there were 122 reported cases of dengue with two deaths in Kompong Cham, down from 315 cases with three deaths during the same period last year, Hai Ra was quoted as saying.

Kompong Cham is the second-most affected province after Phnom Penh, followed by kandal and Siem Reap.

THE total number of dengue fever cases recorded in the first five months of the year was less than half the one recorded during the same period last year, but the number of deaths held steady at seven, Health Ministry officials said Wednesday.

Ngan Chantha, director of the National Anti-Dengue Programme at the Ministry of Health, said there were 1,111 cases of dengue fever between January and May.

?During the first five months last year, there were 2,431 cases, and seven people died from dengue fever,? he said. ?So if we compare, we can see that although the number of cases this year is lower, the percentage of deaths is higher than last year.?

In all of last year, there were 11,699 cases and 38 deaths recorded, with the disease most prevalent in the capital and in Kampong Cham, Kandal, Siem Reap and Banteay Meanchey provinces.

The mosquito-borne infection spreads more rapidly in June, July and August, Ngan Chantha said.

Officials plan to distribute 102 tonnes of Abate ? a mosquito larvaecide ? as part of this year?s anti-dengue campaign, he said.

?I suggest that all people be vigilant in trying to prevent dengue fever, because mosquitoes are everywhere and bite us any time we are careless,? he said.

By way of treatment tips, he suggested wearing long trousers and long-sleeve shirts, using Abate and seeking speedy treatment for anyone exhibiting symptoms of dengue.
