For everyone that is new to following avian flu here is a little bit of information about the process:
1) When a human tests positive for H5N1 local and federal agencies go into an emergency response mode. This is normal. Numerous personel move into the area and sampling begins. Humans, animals, birds, etc. are sampled. Contact tracing begins and people that had contact with the ill person are asked to isolate.
2) Test results are sent to federal labs and also frequently to a WHO collaborating lab for confirmation.
3) Public health officials watch for more sick people - especially watching for any exponential growth in cases which would be a doubling or tripling (or more) of cases weekly.
