The Ministry of Health is strengthening measures to prevent the importation of hantavirus through Techo International Airport and preparing Techo Santepheap National Hospital to handle potential emergency cases.
On Friday, Youk Sambath, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Health, led a delegation to inspect quarantine and health facilities at Techo International Airport in Kandal Stung district, Kandal province, as part of preparations to prevent the spread of Hantavirus into Cambodia.
She instructed airport health teams and departments to strictly monitor the temperatures of all incoming passengers and remain prepared to respond to suspected cases in line with established health protocols.
Authorities were also told to strengthen emergency response systems, including the 115 hotline, and conduct continuous testing. In the event of a suspected case, Techo Santepheap National Hospital has been designated for patient isolation and emergency treatment.
Sambath urged all departments to prepare medical teams for sample collection, screening, and treatment, while ensuring adequate supplies of laboratory equipment, medicines, and personal protective equipment.
She added that the Department of Infectious Diseases must continue disseminating educational messages to citizens and travellers, while relevant teams maintain close monitoring and provide timely information updates.
Nuth Sambath, a public health expert, said preventing community transmission of infectious diseases is essential to improving health security nationally and globally.
He said ministries and relevant institutions should strengthen cooperation and maintain readiness to respond to imported infectious diseases.
Measures should include placing hand sanitiser in public areas, disinfecting key locations, and preparing quarantine facilities, medicines, specialists, and medical equipment.
On Saturday, the Ministry of Health announced that hantavirus can cause severe illness in humans, although no cases have been detected in Cambodia so far.
The ministry said people can contract the virus through contact with rodents, particularly rats, squirrels, and their urine, faeces, or saliva. Transmission through bites or scratches is possible but rare.
The warning follows reports of hantavirus cases aboard a Dutch-flagged cruise ship carrying passengers from 28 countries. Authorities reported eight suspected cases, five confirmed infections, and three deaths, believed to be linked to exposure to rats in southern Argentina.
