At least 12 Cambodians have died of wine poisoning and 20 others fall ill after drinking local-made wine, reported on Monday, citing a senior police official. Non Samen, Police chief of Kompong Cham province was quoted as saying that 12 local residents in Prothet commune, Oreang Ov district of Kompong Cham province, about 125 km east of capital Phnom Penh, had died after drinking local wines poisoning since Oct. 16 in religion ceremony of ancestors. They first feel foot and hand coldness, then began dizzy and vomit, and finally death by suffocation, according to victims family members. Samen added that the local people used the bottles which used to contain grass poisoning to buy local wine and to drink when they gathered in religious ceremony. Nine Cambodians died in first day, and up to now, there were 12 people died and other 20 were falling ill, but now they were getting better after treatment in the hospital, he added. Even though doctors were still investigating the causes and the conclusion did not reveal yet.
