Ten people have fallen ill, with all of them exhibiting similar symptoms in a mysterious outbreak in Banteay Meanchey province’s Poipet city.

The symptoms experienced by the group include abnormal fever, sore throat, skin rashes, joint pains and, in some cases, convulsions.

Banteay Meanchey provincial health department director Oum Rath said the patients had been hospitalised at the provincial health centre and were being monitored by doctors to diagnose the disease.

“The condition of the patients has improved but the medical team is still trying to ascertain the cause of the illness,” he said, adding four of them were women and two were children.

Speaking with doctors at the provincial hospital, Rath said although the cause has not been determined yet, doctors suspect it is Chikungunya disease, which is transmitted through the Aedes mosquito...

PHNOM PENH, July 23 (Xinhua) -- Cambodia on Thursday confirmed the reemergence of Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) in northwestern Banteay Meanchey province after dozens have fallen ill, said a statement from the Ministry of Health.

Residents in six villages in Poipet commune of Poipet city had become sick from July 19 to 22, with the symptoms of fever (38 degrees Celsius), joint pain and rash, the statement said, adding that the blood specimen and samples of 104 patients had been tested for CHIKV, measles, rubella, and COVID-19.

"Those blood specimen and samples had been sent to the Pasteur Institute of Cambodia for lab tests, and preliminary results available Wednesday night showed that they had CHIKV," it said.

Currently, those patients have been recovering at the Poipet referral hospital, it added...

Chikungunya suspected in P Sihanouk as more hospitalised

The Preah Sihanouk provincial Department of Health revealed on Tuesday that 14 people in Koh Rong commune’s Doeum Thkov village are being treated at the provincial referral hospital for fever and red rashes.

The patients are awaiting blood test results to determine if they have chikungunya fever, an outbreak of which occurred in Banteay Meanchey province from July 19 to July 22.

Chikungunya fever is a viral illness that is spread by the bites of infected mosquitoes. It typically lasts from five to seven days and frequently causes severe and often incapacitating joint pain which sometimes persists for much longer periods. It is rarely life-threatening.

Commune police chief Heng Kim Arn said on Monday that nearly 20 people in Doeum Thkov village sought medical treatment at public and private hospitals for fever and rashes...

Chikungunya, often likened to Dengue, has spread to 12 provinces across Cambodia. Over a thousand patients have now tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease between July 19 and 31.

Dengue and Chikungunya, though carried by the same mosquito type, are caused by different viruses. While Chikungunya is caused by a Togaviridae alphavirus, Dengue is caused by a Flavirideae flavivirus. The incubation period of Chikungunya is of 1-12 days and the duration of major symptoms can varies from one to two weeks – Wikipedia.

Of the 1,020 cases – 5% were women – over 80% occurred in Siem Reap, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham and Preah Vihear provinces, according to data from the National Centre for Malaria Control, Parasitology and Botany. There were also cases reported in Oddar Meanchey, Tboung Khmum, Takeo, Kampot, Kampong Som, Pursat, Stung Treng and Pailin provinces.

The Health Ministry reported the province with the highest cases of chikungunya was Siem Reap (the major town near Angkor Wat) with 407 cases, followed by Banteay Meanchey with 211 and Kampong Cham with 132...

Chikungunya hits 15 provinces, says gov’t

Ministry of Health spokeswoman Or Vandine said on Thursday that the chikungunya outbreak in the Kingdom has spread to 15 provinces. Some 1,700 people are now suspected to have the disease.

Vandine urged people to prevent its further spread by eliminating shelters for the Aedes aegypti mosquitoes which are attracted to standing water and breed anywhere water collects.

She told The Post that the National Dengue Control Programme of the National Centre of Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control published a report on Wednesday revealing the number of suspected cases. She said the numbers varied greatly in each province.

“According to the previous report, we had the disease in 12 provinces. But now we have three more provinces – Kampong Thom, Battambang and Kandal,” she said.

The other remaining provinces with cases are Stung Treng, Pailin, Pursat, Oddar Meanchey, Kampot, Tbong Khmum, Takeo, Preah Sihanouk, Preah Vihear, Banteay Meanchey, Kampong Cham and Siem Reap.

Out of the suspected patients tested in Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Siem Reap, Stung Treng, Preah Sihanouk and Battambang provinces, 72.4 per cent were positive for chikungunya, Vandine said...

The Banteay Meanchey provincial Department of Health said an outbreak of chikungunya which occurred on Monday night in O’Prasat commune’s O’Snguot village in Mongkol Borei district has spread to four nearby villages.
The mosquito-borne disease is believed to have afflicted 49 people, including 35 children.
Provincial health department director Le Chansangvath told The Post on Wednesday that experts were immediately sent to investigate the cases.
