More than 1,000 cases of dengue fever have been reported so far this year, a number similar to that reported over the same period last year, said Leang Rithea, the dengue control programme manager at the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control.

Rithea said most of the cases were reported in the capital, Kandal, Kampong Speu and Siem Reap provinces but that the situation this year is ?controllable?...

Health Ministry calls for improved treatment of dengue fever in children

The Health Ministry has appealed to doctors to improve the care of children suffering from dengue fever as the country records an increased number of cases this year.

The Ministry of Health on Saturday held the 4th Cambodian Paediatric Update Symposium in Siem Reap province, where experts and officials discussed health challenges facing children and highlighted dengue fever as a top concern...

...Mr Sunnara said that within the last five months, it was estimated that there were 8,000 cases of dengue fever. In comparison, according to the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, there were around 5,284 cases in the first six months of last year.

?This year, dengue fever cases among children have seen an increase, causing much concern,? Mr Sunnara said. ?At the same time, child obesity, due to environmental and hereditary factors, has also seen an increase, with more children today who are overweight and obese. Increase in dengue reported in Siem Reap

The Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) has expressed its concerns over an increase in severe dengue cases in Siem Reap province. AHC admitted 265 children infected with the virus in the past two months alone, which is more than all of last year, according to an AHC statement issued on Friday.

?Due to an increased need for inpatient care, some patients are on extra mattresses in the hospital?s halls. AHC welcomes donations and support for dengue patients,? the hospital said.

AHC Chief Executive Officer Dr Claudia Turner told The Post on Sunday that every day more and more children are being infected by the dengue virus and need to be sent to the hospital. Severe dengue cases have been increasing as well, which has caused concern...

Kingdom?s dengue cases triple this year

Within a span of 20 weeks this year, the death toll from dengue fever has risen to 21, while the number of those who have fallen ill due to the disease has reached over 12,000.

A specialised official said the figure has risen about three times as much compared to the same period last year when about 3,000 people contracted dengue fever.

Leang Rithy, the director of the National Dengue Disease Control Programme at the National Centre for Malaria, Pandemic and Entomology, told The Post on Sunday the deceased were from the capital and six provinces.

He said most of them died because they sought treatment at small, unspecialised private clinics without proper medical equipment instead of admitting themselves to state-run hospitals or health centres...

Hundreds of children in hospital with dengue

A serious dengue fever epidemic is affecting Cambodia, with nearly 600 children hospitalised in the five Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals on Monday alone, a statement posted on the Kantha Bopha Foundation?s official Facebook page said on Wednesday.

Because Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals provide free medical care, many parents take their children to one of its hospitals when they suspect their children may have dengue.

The Kantha Bopha Foundation has daily records of the number of children receiving medical treatment at all its five hospitals.

It especially notes the number of dengue fever patients.

?Figures from the five Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals on Monday, June 17, indicated that 4,305 sick children have been examined and treated at the outpatient sections and 2,990 children with serious illnesses were hospitalised."

?Among them, 577 children were diagnosed as suffering from severe hemorrhagic dengue fever and were hospitalised, while 89 were operated on,? the Kantha Bopha Foundation said...

Health officials warn parents of dengue fever

Health officials are calling on the parents to bring their children to a state hospital, not private clinics, if they show symptoms of dengue fever, as more cases are being recorded so far this year.

Huy Rekol, director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control, yesterday said during a press conference at the National Paediatric Hospital that parents have to quickly send their children to seek medical treatment if they show symptoms of dengue fever.

Mr Rekol said parents should refrain from medicating their own children using medication obtained in pharmacies...

...He noted the Health Ministry has estimated that cases of dengue fever could rise to 50,000 this year, adding that the CNM has prepared 67,000 packs of serum for patients...

Experts warn dengue could spread further

As the death toll from dengue fever has risen to at least 30 at Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals alone, health specialists have warned the disease could spread during the rainy season and urged parents to remain cautious, take good care of their children and protect them from being bitten by mosquitoes.

Ky Santy, the director of Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals, said as of July 1 at least 30 children out of more than 16,000 dengue fever patients who had been admitted to the five Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap had died from the virus.

Santy said the number of dengue fever patients has continued to rise remarkably, especially between the end of May and the beginning of July, despite the Ministry of Health?s efforts in preventing an outbreak.

He noted the five Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospitals in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap province admit more than 4,000 patients per day, 700 of whom had dengue fever.

?The outbreak of dengue fever has caused great concerns. During this rainy season, the number of dengue patients will continue to increase. Cambodia has entered the year?s peak cycle for dengue so people need to be very careful about an outbreak,? he said...
