Dengue cases jump by 130 percent, one death reported in Phnom Penh

The number of dengue cases reported in the first three weeks of the year has spiked compared to the same period in 2017, with an increase of more than 130 percent and one documented death from the virus, the government announced today.

Officials had previously predicted another epidemic could hit the country either in 2017 or this year. There was no noticeable increase in cases last year, however, but it now appears the expected jump is taking place and has reached epidemic levels, according to a Ministry of Health statement.

During the first three weeks of January, there were 316 cases, compared to 138 during the same period in 2017, said Dr Ly Sovann, a health ministry spokesman and director of the ministry?s Communicable Disease Control Department...

The number of dengue fever cases recorded so far this year in Cambodia continues to outpace the number of infections seen in the same period last year, with the peak season for the mosquito-borne virus still to come.

In the first nine weeks of 2018, the Kingdom already had tallied more than 800 cases of the disease, more than double the nearly 350 cases that were counted in the same period last year, said Dr Leang Rithea, director of the National Dengue Control Program.

Officials are heartened, however, to see the infection rate is starting to turn a corner.

The initial six weeks of the year saw roughly 100 new infections per week, while the rate over the past three weeks slowed to 80 to 90 ? a significant enough drop for Rithea to deem the dengue situation ?controllable?.

Rithea told officials gathered at a Friday meeting of representatives from the French Development Agency (AFD), the Pasteur Institute and various government ministries that despite the increased number of infections in the early part of the year, government officials do not expect the total for 2018 to be higher than usual.

Government data models indicate Cambodia could see anywhere from 10,000 to 17,000 cases in 2018 ? officials say 14,500 cases is the average number of dengue fever cases expected in a given year...

The number of dengue cases during the first half of this year more than doubled compared to the same period last year and is increasing, a government report said on Wednesday.

The National Center for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control (CNM) at the Ministry of Health released a document saying there were 3,284 cases of dengue fever from January to June, seven of which were fatal.

Last year there were only 1,580 cases and one death over the same period...

The number of dengue fever cases in the first half of the year increased by more than 200 percent when compared to the same period last year, a report from the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria Control shows.

The report said there were 5,284 dengue fever cases in the first six months of 2018, leading to ten deaths.

?The cases of dengue fever in 2018 is higher than last year by more than 200 percent,? said Huy Rekol, director of the centre. ?There were 1,590 cases in the first six months of 2017.?

?Ten people were killed by dengue fever in 2018, which is up from just one person in the first half of last year,? he added...

Dengue outbreak sees 1,691 kids hospitalised in a month

A total of 1,691 children were hospitalised at Kantha Bopha Children?s Hospital between October 21 and November 21 after an outbreak of haemorrhagic dengue fever.

Another 1,626 children were hospitalised at other Kantha Bopha hospitals during the same period, according to a report from the hospital obtained by The Post on Wednesday.

The report said the period saw the hospitalisation of 626 more children due to the disease than between September 21 and October 21. Of those, 140 children suffered from severe acute encephalitis, which is occasionally caused by haemorrhagic dengue fever...

Sharp rise in dengue deaths

A Health Ministry official yesterday said more people died last year after contracting dengue fever than in 2017.

Huy Rekol, director of the National Centre for Parasitology, Entomology and Malaria, said that according to a report by his organisation there were 24,684 cases with 23 deaths last year, a sharp rise when compared to 2017?s 6,372 cases with three deaths.

Mr Rekol said the increase was due to last year?s seasonal cycle and climate change...
