The new data shows that the government should reconsider, said Penny Ward, visiting professor in pharmaceutical medicine at King’s College London. “The slow start of [the fourth dose] campaign now means the most vulnerable group are already at least six months away from their third shot at this point,” she said.

“The government needs to consider carefully whether they should acquire further doses of antivirals to treat a broader proportion of the vulnerable elderly group and accelerate an additional booster campaign to try to reverse this.”

There are also growing concerns over the so-called ‘stealth Omicron’ variant, which is also known as BA.2.

Experts at the Zoe Covid Study app say that the number of infections caused by the strain are “doubling” in the UK every few days.

Covid infections are increasing across the UK with about one in 25 people infected, according to the latest estimates from the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

In Scotland, 300,000 people - one in 18 - have coronavirus, the highest level recorded during the pandemic.

A sub-variant of Omicron, called BA.2, is now thought to be the most common strain in most of the UK.

The ONS says it's too early to say what's behind the rise in cases.

But some scientists believe the BA.2 variant's increased transmissibility, recent easing of restrictions and waning immunity from the vaccines could all be factors.
