Stanford Surgeon Under ?Modified Quarantine? In San Mateo County After Returning From Liberia

SAN MATEO (KCBS)? A Stanford surgeon has been put on modified quarantine in San Mateo County after treating Ebola patients in Liberia for the past month.

Dr. Colin Bucks returned to the Bay Area on Friday, but no state or federal quarantine orders were in place at the time. Dr. Bucks is not experiencing any symptoms of Ebola, but he is the first Californian to be quarantined under the new guidelines. Bucks is considered by health officials to be at ?some risk.? . . . .

Re: California tracking surgeon

This is less than 50 miles from me. I was next door to Stanford (where this doc is from) today. Found out today as I was driving home from shopping. Time to break out the gloves I guess if I need to go out and about. I have some "fashionable" glove for now that I can wear. And the temp is dropping tomorrow so it won't look like I'm paranoid. ;-)

Re: California tracking surgeon

Dr. Bucks was told to stay away from work and to stay away from others for 21 days. However, he can leave his house to go jogging by himself. He is taking his temperature every day and has not developed any symptoms.

?I?m California?s most experienced Ebola physician. I won?t take a single chance,? said Dr. Bucks in a New York Times interview. ?My wife is away, my dog is away ? there?s no downside to a little personal convenience, 3 weeks will pass.?

He will enlist the public's respect and gratitude. Thanks doc!

Excellent to see reporting on Dr. Buck's words re: his quarantine. Thanks for sharing that here

Re: California tracking surgeon

Glad Dr. Bucks is doing it right, but he has no choice. California has strict guidelines in place and this is the first time I have ever seen this liberal state do anything like this. On California Dept of Public Health Site, They have gone over the top for this Ebola situation and I am glad they are being so proactive.

He does have a choice. He's choosing to not endanger his wife or his dog either. For which, I applaud him.

ETA: He also has a choice in how he's dealing with the quarantine - rather than fight it or force a court to get involved, he's embracing it as a safety measure. This is a doctor I would trust to do things right.

The California guidelines, which the San Mateo health department and Dr. Bucks are following, are taken from the Interim U.S. Guidance for Monitoring and Movement of Persons with Potential Ebola Virus Exposure issued October 27 by the CDC. The CDC developed this guidance in response to Dr. Spencer's infection in New York, and the subsequent quarantining of Kaci Hickox in New Jersey, in effort to prevent similar situations from occurring again. The judge in Maine has used this guidance to fashion the order in the Kaci Hickox's case.
