Santa Barbara County resident monitored for possible Ebola infection

By MATT HAMILTON
...
The person -- whose identity was not released -- developed a fever and showed other symptoms of sickness during a 21-day-long Ebola screening program run by the Santa Barbara County Public Health Department, said department spokeswoman Susan Klein-Rothschild.
...
The possibility of an Ebola infection is "highly unlikely," Klein-Rothschild said. County health officials counseled the state department of public health and the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention before deciding to "take all precautionary measures," Klein-Rothschild said.

The person was being transported to an undisclosed hospital in Los Angeles County in a specially prepared ambulance that is designed to protect the driver and other health professionals from exposure.

Monitored Traveler Does Not Have Ebola

Santa Barbara County has been monitoring an individual traveler who traveled to one of the
African countries where Ebola is epidemic. After the traveler became ill, extra precautions were
to taken to isolate the individual, transport her to an assessment hospital and test for Ebola.
Test results and clinical evaluation confirm the patient does NOT have Ebola.

American Medical Response (AMR) and the AMR Infectious Disease Response Team
successfully transported the patient to a designated assessment hospital in the Los Angeles
area.

The patient?s condition improved since hospitalization yesterday. The patient no longer has
signs of fever or illness. All test results were in normal ranges.

The patient will be discharged from the hospital today. The County will continue to monitor the
traveler through the 21 day period since the departure from the African country as is the
protocol for all travelers.

Since December of 2014, Santa Barbara County has monitored a handful of travelers.
The County Public Health Department appreciates excellent partnership with American Medical
Response, Los Angeles County Public Health Department, California Department of Public
Health, Centers for Disease Control, and hospital partners. Together, we protected patient
health and confidentiality while protecting the health of the public.
