Winter 2013

At the WeekEnd, Atlanta

A December Void

During the minimal pH1N1 case count in the Northern Hemisphere's 2012 season and post-season, the US CDC demonstrated the experimental importance of Egg Passage strategies. Variant polymorphisms known to drive deep lung involvement in humans were surfaced repeatedly from quasi-species. That egg-based experimentation was considered valuable and was pursued throughout much of 2013, but evidently not to quantify the actual circulating pH1N1 viral population . . . because the production came to a full halt at the moment that the US flu season's high fatality rates became public due to an unexpected re-emergence of pH1N1 . . .

Two more flu-related deaths bump Bay Area total to 23

As flu season continues this winter, Santa Clara County reported two more flu-related deaths Friday, bringing the Bay Area total to 23.

Two women, ages 52 and 62, died this week from the H1N1 virus, also known as ?swine flu,? Santa Clara County Public Health Department spokeswoman Amy Cornell said Friday.

The county reported the first Bay Area flu-related death this season when a 41-year-old woman passed away in December shortly before Christmas, Cornell said.

This month two men, 61 and 56 years old, and a 62-year-old woman have also died from the virus, she said.

There have been six flu-related deaths in the county this season.

There have also been 15 people who have been hospitalized after coming down with severe cases of the flu this season, according to Cornell.

Three H1N1 deaths confirmed in Mendoncino Co.

The Mendocino County Health and Human Services Agency's Public Health Division on Tuesday confirmed that three deaths have occurred in Mendocino County related to the H1N1 flu.

Due to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations, the HHSA could not confirm the ages of the patients who died, but stated they were adults. Public Health was notified of the first death in early January. A lab notified Public Health of the second death late last week, and of the third death early this week.

Flu deaths mount in Sonoma, Mendocino counties

Four more people have died from complications of the H1N1 flu virus in Sonoma and Mendocino counties, nearly doubling the local death toll from the outbreak.

Two of the deaths occurred in Sonoma County and two in Mendocino County, according to public health officials.

But the new deaths come even as the spread of the flu virus begins to wind down from what may have been a seasonal high point last month, said Karen Holbrook, interim public health officer in Sonoma County.

?I think we have peaked,? Holbrook said. ?The percent of respiratory specimens testing positive for influenza statewide is trending downward.?

The number of hospitalizations across California have also decreased, according to statewide figures reported a week ago. The latest official state influenza data will be reported Friday morning.
