Two More Flu Deaths Reported in Bay Area

Two more influenza-related deaths were reported in Alameda County today after the state Department of Public health announced fatal infections of the virus from throughout the state.

There have been three cases of H1N1 strains of the flu leading to deaths in Alameda County since the beginning of the winter season, county public health department spokeswoman Sherri Willis said. One was reported earlier this week and two more confirmed cases came in today, she said.

The three make for a total of 11 flu deaths that have been reported in Bay Area counties

Health officials warn flu is striking early this season

It may be no surprise to snifflers stuck in doctor's office waiting rooms: The 2013-2014 influenza season appears to be picking up steam earlier than most flu seasons.

On Friday, state and Los Angeles County health officials reported "sharp increases" in influenza activity, including illnesses and deaths.

"The number of confirmed fatalities is rising rapidly and exceeds what is expected this time of year," said state epidemiologist Dr. Gil Chavez, of the California Department of Public Health in Sacramento.

This quotation raises a question that leads to others:

How did the state know of the status on the two fatalities that were reported as unvaccinated?

Is it possible that a case worker asked the ill victim or a family member and then with due diligence conducted a medical records review via the primary / attending physician?

Is that how the state discovered the vaccination status of those that were reported as unvaccinated? Was the same process used with 100% of the remaining Fatal cases and somehow the state was not able to discover the answer to a "yes / no" question?

What exactly defines an inability to discover the status?

Evidently, only a vaccination status of "unvaccinated" is discoverable and reportable in California. Is it possible that those who are vaccinated and die may somehow have their deaths recorded to an "unknown" vaccine status?

If 5 of 7 Fatal cases cannot have stats discovered, then does the sub-group of 2 Fatalities with reported stats constitute a valid cohort for measurement confidence?

Mathematics and biology each may be challenging.

Taken together, they may be daunting. But in no case should they be left as "mysterious". In times past, a reliance on observations was considered good science. Fact-based decision-making and communications were prominent features of medical practice.

Perhaps in this modern era, citizens have gotten lost in the superlatives used in the managed messages from their public health leaders and their doctors. A lack of accountability to an informed citizenry allows, almost promotes, these kinds of statements as quoted here.

Facts, on the other hand, cut through conjecture as a lighthouse defines the rocky coast.

We live in an era where insight is achievable. Outmoded policies, intentional stagnation and inability to adapt by thought leaders condemn constituents.

Influenza is far less mysterious than we have been led and are being led to believe.

Let's rely on some facts.
