A new case of coronavirus has been confirmed in Southern California, the third in the United States as the fast-moving virus spreads worldwide.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notified Orange County health officials Saturday that a potential case of coronavirus tested positive.

The person who tested positive traveled from Wuhan, China, -- the epicenter of the outbreak -- and is in isolation and in "good condition" at a local hospital, the Orange County Health Care Agency said in a statement....

OC Health Care Agency Confirms First Case of Novel Coronavirus in Orange County, California

(Santa Ana, CA) – The OC Health Care Agency’s (HCA) Communicable Disease Control Division received confirmation from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) this evening that an Orange County, California case has tested positive for the novel coronavirus.

The case, a traveler from Wuhan, China, has been in contact with the HCA and was provided guidance in order to reduce exposure to the public while awaiting laboratory confirmation from the CDC. The individual has now been transported to a local hospital and is in isolation in good condition.

In consultation with the CDC and the California Department of Public Health, the HCA is following up directly with all individuals who have had close contact with the case and are at risk of infection.
  • The HCA will be monitoring any close contacts and assure that proper evaluation and care is provided if they become ill.
  • The CDC’s guidance indicates that people who have casual contact with a case (in the same grocery store or movie theater) are at minimal risk of developing infection.
  • There is no evidence that person-to-person transmission has occurred in Orange County.
  • The current risk of local transmission remains low.
No additional details about the case will be released at this time.

Public Health Confirms First Case of 2019 Novel Coronavirus in Los Angeles County
LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) has confirmed the first case of 2019 novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in Los Angeles County. The infected person presented themselves for care once they noticed that they were not feeling well and is currently receiving medical treatment. There is no immediate threat to the general public, no special precautions are required, and people should not be excluded from activities based on their race, country of origin, or recent travel if they do not have symptoms of respiratory illness. Los Angeles residents, students, workers, and visitors should continue to engage in their regular activities and practice good public health hygiene as this is the height of flu season across the County. Public Health is working closely with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and other federal, state and local agencies to monitor this novel coronavirus that has emerged from Wuhan, China over the past few weeks. 100ish persons under observation in 26 states, 25 have tested negative. Getting calls from clinicans all the time about potential cases so this number changes.

5 cases in the US, all with direct contact to Wuhan - 2 in California and 1 in Arizona (Maricopa county) are new - added to previously known Washington state, and Illinois. All are hospitalized. Hospital release on a case by case basis.

There will be additional cases in the US.

In active collaboration with experts around the world to understand the virus genome.

Situation is changing rapidly. Pay attention to CDC website for travel warnings.

I did not hear the answer to a question asked about the virus being able to be transmitted via packaging.

Local Health departments are responsible for updating local results PUI to health facilities/providers.

EMS Has met to review with EMS administrators to review. Sacramento county has developed a novel coronavirus policy that has been shared with other state EMS.

Questions:

How long should a room be empty if not negative pressure for PUI? Guidance is in AFL. 1 hour is the rule of thumb.

Will any of the Health Departments be able to obtain specimens for testing? Will local health departments do any screening at the Health department? Work out case by case with local health department.

Employee health portion- will they need 14 day off work if exposed? There is a framework for Health Care workers that assess by level of risk (High with no PPE and confirmed case and low risk with PPE). Motoring for 14 days for symptoms. Right now no restriction if no symptoms. Local Health department can ask for more conservative.

Will there be a designated hospital treatment list like for Ebola? No, all Healthcare facilities need to be prepared for new threats including novel coronavirus. Follow-up asking about 14 days? Longest time to get symptoms

Standard contact precautions, N95 + Eye protection for PPE is recommended. Full suit not needed. Correct donning and doffing most important. Again recommendation not to do a sputum induction due to creating aerosols.

Regarding family members recently return from China, OK to stop visiting other patients? Check with local health department, no restrictions though for asymptomatic. Only concern would be within 14 days and symptomatic.

Is CDPH monitoring PPE? Notified of shortages with recent order. We are aware of issue around PPE one of key roles at CDPH is a good snapshot of needs so please reply to survey. If you are a HCF and anticipate issues please email the norovirus email below to let CDPH know.

Is there a point we would recommend full-time masking of frontline HCW? At this point CDC has not seen evidence yet that this is needed. Monitoring close contacts of US cases to see risk level. Asymptomatic carriers have not in past lead to full blown epidemics.

Expanding travel history question to expand to China in general rather than just Wuhan? Risk is considering all of china so we anticipate a change in PUI criteria. Posters were already updated.

If we have a patient that has PUI and the room is not negative pressure how long? Yes still 1 hour to turn over room air with door closed then standard environmental cleaning.

Ontario airport has flight coming in today or tomorrow from China? US state department and HHS have been learning efforts, CDPH is ready to welcome. We will share more details as they become available.

Private providers are seeing providers and are sending to hospital and this is overwhelming nearby medical centers. CDPH is working on reaching out to individual providers. Also encourage to work with your local health department to engage and provide additional guidance.

First case of coronavirus confirmed in San Diego

According to UC San Diego, hospital officials were informed by San Diego Public Health that four patients being evaluated for the virus tested negative. At the direction of the CDC, all four individuals were discharged and sent back into quarantine at MCAS Miramar.

The hospital says the CDC later advised public health officials that, upon further testing, one of the four patients tested positive for coronavirus. The individual was "returned to UC San Diego Health for observation and isolation until cleared by the CDC for release."

Coronavirus 2019-nCoV Update

On Sunday, February 9, U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) officials informed San Diego Public Health that all four patients being evaluated for 2019-nCoV at UC San Diego Health had tested negative for the virus. This information was shared with UC San Diego Health and at the CDC’s direction, the four patients were discharged and returned to federal quarantine at MCAS Miramar.

This morning, CDC officials advised San Diego Public Health that further testing revealed that one of the four patients tested positive for 2019-nCoV. The confirmed positive patient was returned to UC San Diego Health for observation and isolation until cleared by the CDC for release.

One additional patient from MCAS Miramar was transported to UC San Diego Health this afternoon for evaluation for 2019-nCoV. As per CDC instruction, patients being evaluated will remain admitted until the test results are confirmed by the CDC.

Both patients are doing well and have minimal symptoms.

The safety and welfare of our staff and patients remains our number one priority.

Two More MCAS Quarantine Patients Taken To Hospital To Test For Coronavirus

Four other people were hospitalized Wednesday afternoon, hours after a plane carrying 167 Americans landed at the northern San Diego military base. All passengers underwent medical screening upon landing.

Doctors from UC San Diego Health and Rady Children's Hospital told reporters Thursday morning that the initial four patients all had stable vital signs. Two unrelated adults were being treated at UCSD Health, and one father and his daughter were at Rady Children's Hospital, according to the federal agency.

Doctors said they were awaiting test results from the CDC to determine if any of the four patients are infected with coronavirus. Those results are expected as early as Saturday morning.

CDC yesterday confirmed another infection with 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) in the United States that was detected in California. The patient who was under a federal quarantine order recently returned from Wuhan, China, where an outbreak of respiratory illness caused by this novel coronavirus has been ongoing since December 2019. This brings the total of number of 2019-nCoV cases in the United States to 13.
CDC is conducting a thorough contact investigation of the person who has tested positive to determine contacts and to assess if those contacts had high risk exposures.

CDC Confirms 14th Case of 2019 Novel Coronavirus

CDC today confirmed another infection with 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19) in the United States in California. The patient is among a group of people under a federal quarantine order because of their recent return to the U.S. on a State Department-chartered flight that arrived on February 7, 2020.

All people who have been in Hubei Province in the past 14 days are considered at high risk of having been exposed to COVID-19 and subject to a temporary 14-day quarantine. This is the second person at this base who has tested positive for COVID-19. The first and second patients arrived on different planes and were housed in separate facilities; there are no epidemiologic links between them.

According to CDC on-site team lead Dr. Chris Braden, “At this time there is no indication of person-to-person spread of this virus at the quarantine facility, but CDC will carry out a thorough contact investigation as part of its current response strategy to detect and contain any cases of infection with this virus.”

This brings the total of number of COVID-19 cases in the United States to 14. There are likely to be additional cases in the coming days and weeks, including among other people recently returned from Wuhan. While 195 people were discharged from quarantine yesterday, more than 600 people who returned on chartered flights from Wuhan remain under federal quarantine.

Seven people total -- all passengers of the first plane that arrived Wednesday with 167 passengers -- have been at one point removed from quarantine at the base and placed in isolation at area hospitals for further coronavirus testing.

@MCASMiramarCA can now confirm the planned arrival of a second inbound flight originating from China. The flight will land in the mid-morning hours of 7 Feb. HHS and CDC personnel will receive these travelers as they begin the federally mandated quarantine.

Four were removed Wednesday when the flight landed at the base, two to UC San Diego Medical Center and two to Rady Children's Hospital; a fifth was sent to UC San Diego Medical Center Thursday afternoon; and two were isolated on Friday, one at UC San Diego Medical Center and one at Rady Children's Hospital.

Before the second flight landed in San Diego, two passengers were released during a stop in Vancouver. One of those passengers is a Canadian citizen, and the other showed symptoms of coughing and fever.
