Flu deaths in Ventura County doubled in the past month in a rise a public health official said is not unusual but is evidence of a still-lingering season marked by two different strains of the flu.
As of Tuesday, 10 people in the county had suffered flu-linked deaths during the current flu season, including four people younger than 65, said Ventura County Public Health Officer Dr. Robert Levin. Since Feb. 12, five people had died.

County reports seventh flu death of the season

The Kern County Public Health Services Department has reported another flu death for this season.
As of March 8, seven people have died due to the flu this season and 19 people have been hospitalized, a large jump from two deaths and 11 hospitalizations last season. The death comes after two deaths were reported less than a month ago.
These counts only includes flu deaths and hospitalizations of people under age 65.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY, CA ? Five more flu-related deaths were documented last week in San Diego County, though the number of influenza cases decreased countywide for the third consecutive week, health officials announced Wednesday.
The five residents who died due to flu-related causes ranged in age from 47 to 77 years old. All five had additional medical issues, as well, according to the county's Health and Human Services Agency.
The deaths bring the county's flu season death toll to 64; flu deaths at this time last season totaled 339.
