San Diego?s latest weekly flu update was released Wednesday.

Eighteen new deaths were announced.
New case volume slowed a bit compared to two weeks ago.
The mix of circulating influenza virus types continues to shift toward the less-severe influenza B strains.

Still causing above-average numbers of cases and deaths, the flu looked a little less severe last week than it did two weeks ago, according to the latest weekly update from San Diego?s public health department.

Another 18 deaths and 721 confirmed cases were announced Wednesday, bringing the season total to 16,827 cases and 269 deaths, both numbers that far outstrip prior three-year season averages, continuing to make the case that this is the most severe influenza season since 2009.

Solano County flu deaths reach 7

County public health officials reported seven Solano County residents, ages 19 to 64, have died of flu or flu-related causes since the season began Oct. 1, and the number of deaths continues to rise although flu cases are decreasing, generally reflecting statewide data, The Reporter has learned.

A health education specialist with the county Department of Public Health, Shai Davis noted in email that, while the number of reported flu cases decreased in late February compared to January, ?We are still getting reports of deaths.?

14 more flu deaths identified; flu season winding down, health officials confirm

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) -- Flu activity is slowing down throughout San Diego County, the County Health and Human Services Agency said Wednesday.

Across the county, 14 more flu deaths have been identified over the last week, though 10 of those fatalities happened earlier in the season and have just now been confirmed.

A total of 283 flu deaths have occurred in the county this season.

seen in December.
Summary of recent influenza activity in Santa Barbara County the past week was ?widespread*?.
Sentinel Data: The five reporting Sentinel Provider Sites reported influenza-like illness (ILI) in 12 of the
patients seen in week 8 (12/356; 3.4%), (please see the chart 1 below). In the past week, of the Hospital
Emergency Departments that completed the daily poll, 292 (10.2%) of the 2853 patients seen had ILI and
30 were admitted. (This trend is higher than that seen in the same time period in 2017 at 6.0% (117/1943)
of ED visits due to ILI).
Provider reports: This season there have been 19 confirmed ICU hospitalizations in the reportable age
range 0-64 years and there have been 13 outbreaks of Upper Respiratory Illness reported in County
Skilled Nursing & Long Term Care Facilities. There have been a total of 12 known flu-related deaths in the
County this season. Two decedents were in the mandated reportable age range of 0-64 years and both
had underlying conditions. The additional 10 decedents were persons over 64 years of age, 9 of which
have been linked to some of the outbreaks. This number may change as death certificates are reviewed.

Influenza Activity Expected to Continue for Several More Weeks; It?s Not Too Late to Vaccinate!
Current Situation:
Influenza activity significantly decreased from week 1 through week 4; however, a slight increase in activity was observed over the past two weeks. Influenza activity is expected to continue through May and Orange County residents are encouraged to be vaccinated if they still haven?t received the 2017-18 vaccine. To date, 74 severe cases of influenza (less than 65 years of age and hospitalized in intensive care or who died) have been reported in Orange County; 12 of the 74 severe cases were influenza-associated deaths. Influenza A(H3) overall has been the most frequently identified influenza virus but A(H1N1) and B strains have also been reported. Of note, the proportion of influenza reports that are type B (blue bar in graph) has increased over the past few weeks.

Flu update: Cases rise slightly as season continues to look less deadly (San Diego)

The flu continues to generate a larger-than-average number of cases though the death rate and impact on emergency departments continues to trend downward, according to the county?s latest weekly influenza report released Wednesday.

Seven deaths were added to the running total for the 2017-2018 season, but only one of those occurred last week. As is regularly the case, county epidemiologists continue to discover flu-related deaths that occurred weeks or even months ago when infections were spreading much more quickly through the community.

The death total for the current season reached 289 this week. According to county records, 65 percent of those who died were not vaccinated and 96 percent had other underlying health conditions that contributed to their deaths.

Flu death toll rises to more than 300 in San Diego

SAN DIEGO ? Thirteen influenza-related deaths reported last week have brought the season?s total to 302 in San Diego County, health officials announced Wednesday.

This has been a particularly severe flu season in the region and across the country. At this time last year, just 68 deaths were reported.

Second wave of the seasonal flu crashes into Stanislaus County

Residents in Stanislaus County should not assume the flu season has passed.


In general, the county Health Services Agency has noticed a decrease in flu activity, but another strain of virus is causing outbreaks and it?s more dangerous for young children.

The county?s contagious disease unit is primarily seeing cases of influenza B, Anuj Bhatia, a county health services spokesman, said Tuesday.

Sixteen deaths so far have been reported by the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department in what is being called the worst flu season they have seen.

This means there has been a 40 percent increase in flu-related deaths this year, as compared to the last.
Of the 16 deaths on the Central Coast, two adults were under the age of 64, while the other 14 were over the age of 65, officials said.

Flu Cases, Deaths Hit Highest Numbers Ever Reported in San Diego County

More than 20,000 lab-confirmed flu cases have been reported this season, the highest total since the County of San Deigo Health and Human Services Agency began tracking the virus 20 years ago.

A total of 247 new flu cases were reported last week, bringing this season?s total to 20,131, according to the latest County Influenza Watch report.

The number of weekly cases being reported continues to be elevated for this time of year, officials said.

With another seven influenza-related deaths reported last week, this season?s total now stands at 326. San Diegans who died from flu this season range in age from 1 to 101, and almost all had underlying medical conditions, the county reported.

SAN DIEGO (COUNTY NEWS CENTER) - Eight more flu deaths were reported last week and influenza activity in the region remained steady, the County Health and Human Services Agency announced today.

The new reported flu deaths include a 33-year-old San Diego woman, bringing this season?s total 334. Those who died ranged in age from 1 to 101, and almost all had underlying medical conditions. Forty-three (13 percent) of the deaths were of people under 65 years old, which are the only cases public health agencies are required to report in California. The County informs the public about all flu deaths. The high number of deaths is the result of an unusually severe flu season but also due to better reporting and tracking by the local medical community and the County.
