Flu update: Nearly 800 cases reported, 18 deaths

San Diego?s latest weekly flu update was released Wednesday.
Eighteen new deaths were announced.
New case volume slowed a bit compared to two weeks ago.
The mix of circulating influenza virus types continues to shift toward the less-severe influenza B strains.

Still causing above-average numbers of cases and deaths, the flu looked a little less severe last week than it did two weeks ago, according to the latest weekly update from San Diego?s public health department.
Another 18 deaths and 721 confirmed cases were announced Wednesday, bringing the season total to 16,827 cases and 269 deaths, both numbers that far outstrip prior three-year season averages, continuing to make the case that this is the most severe influenza season since 2009.
