Flu now linked to 15 deaths in SLO County this season, officials say

The number of deaths in San Luis Obispo County linked to the flu continues to rise, health officials say.

San Luis Obispo County epidemiologist Ann McDowell said Tuesday that the agency has identified 15 deaths of county residents between Dec. 10 and Jan. 30 in which type B influenza is listed as a contributing factor on the death certificate. Two of those deaths were people under the age of 65.

[h=1]San Diego flu season: 10-year-old boy among newly reported flu deaths[/h]

SAN DIEGO (KGTV) - Thirty-two new flu-related deaths, among them a 10-year-old boy, were reported in San Diego last week, bringing the number of deaths this flu season to 206, county health officials announced Wednesday.


According to County Health and Human Services Agency officials, the 10-year-old boy died on Jan. 25 after he was hospitalized with influenza A/H3. Officials noted he was not vaccinated and had underlying medical conditions.


Officials confirmed the boy is the second San Diego County child to die from the flu this season. According to officials, "two pediatric flu-related deaths were reported each of the past two seasons."

25 New Flu Deaths Reported in San Diego County

There have been more than two dozen more influenza deaths and a spike in influenza B cases, according to the weekly report from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.

Twenty-five people died from the flu as of Feb. 3, county officials said, bringing the total deaths this flu season in San Diego to 231.

A third of the deaths involved people under the age of 65, officials said. The youngest victim was 1-year-old and the oldest was 101.

So far this flu season, the virus has killed 163 people under the age of 65 in California.

New influenza cases are dropping across California, but deaths continue to rise in the Golden State as this season?s mighty wave of flu maintains its grip locally and on the nation, state health officials announced Friday.

Last week, 36 more people in California died of the flu, or six more than the week before. That brought the number of deaths to 163 statewide, but doesn?t include those who are 65 years old or older, according to the latest data released by the California Department of Public Health.

A freshman at La Reina High School died from complications from the flu yesterday, just eight days before her 15th birthday.


Michael Chabot announced his 14-year-old daughter had died in a Facebook post around midnight on Thursday.

?Today I experienced the day that no parent should. I lost my daughter . . . my angel Gabriella Chabot. We are heartbroken,? he said. ?I love you peanut! Papi will never forget you. You will always be my angel.?

Flu death toll rises to 251 in San Diego

SAN DIEGO ? San Diego County reported 20 more flu-related deaths last week, bringing the region?s season total to 251 fatalities.

The county Health and Human Services Agency announced the new tally on Wednesday.

Last week also brought another uptick in the total number of lab- confirmed cases. There were 941 cases last week, up from 835 the week before, which brought an end to a weeks-long downward trend in the number of cases.

The worst of California's rough flu season appears to be over. A senior state public health official says this year?s season reached its disturbingly high peak around New Year's.

People should remain vigilant, however, because "we?re still very much in the middle of it," said Dr. James Watt, Chief of Communicable Disease Control at the California Department of Public Health.

Like in much of the rest of the country, the flu hit California hard this season. By the end of last week, 185 Californians under age 65 had died from flu in the state. By the same time last year, the death toll was 50.

The 2017-2018 influenza surveillance season began on 10/1/17 (disease week 40). This report will be
released weekly throughout the remainder of the influenza season due to the recent increase of cases
seen in December.
Summary of recent influenza activity in Santa Barbara County the past week was ?widespread*?.
Sentinel Data: The five reporting Sentinel Provider Sites reported influenza-like illness (ILI) in 23 of the
patients seen in week 6 (23/636; 3.6%), (please see the chart 1 below). In the past week, of the Hospital
Emergency Departments that completed the daily poll, 315 (13.6%) of the 2308 patients seen had ILI and
29 were admitted. (This trend is higher than that seen in the same time period in 2017 at 9.3% (298/3214)
of ED visits due to ILI).
Provider reports: This season there have been 14 confirmed ICU hospitalizations in the reportable age
range 0-64 years and there have been 12 outbreaks of Upper Respiratory Illness reported in County
Skilled Nursing & Long Term Care Facilities. There have been 10 known flu-related deaths in the County
this season of persons outside the mandated reportable age range of 0-64 years, 9 of which have been
linked to some of the outbreaks. This number may change as death certificates are reviewed.
