Illegally dumped chickens in Acton connected to avian virus

ACTON — An illegal dumping of dozens of chickens discovered along a roadway in Acton in late November has been linked to a highly contagious avian disease, prompting concerns about potential spread to other backyard flocks in the area.

Approximately 50 to 60 chickens were found Nov. 24 on the side of the road near Crown Valley Community Church off Sierra Highway and Avenue V.

Necessary said many of the dead birds were stuffed inside roughly 15 large, 50-pound empty feed bags that had been left along the roadside. The birds were turned over to the county and picked up by animal control later that same day.

The chickens were tested by the Los Angeles County Veterinary Public Health Program, with initial testing conducted right away for avian influenza, commonly known as bird flu. Those results came back negative.

However, additional laboratory testing was performed to look for other possible diseases, and officials recently confirmed that the birds were positive for Infectious Laryngotracheitis, commonly referred to as ILT.
