CDPH WARNS CONSUMERS NOT TO EAT CERTAIN ROMAINE LETTUCE DUE TO HEALTH RISK

SACRAMENTO: The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is warning consumers not to eat certain Tanimura & Antle romaine lettuce because it may be contaminated with E. Coli O157H7.
Tanimura & Antle is voluntarily recalling field-packed, single-head, romaine lettuce with a Best Buy date of ?08 09 12?.
The product was available at retail locations Aug. 2 ? Aug. 19, 2012.
To date, no illnesses have been reported. Consumers should discard the product or return them to their place of purchase.
The recall was issued based on a positive finding of E.coli O157:H7 from a sample of romaine lettuce collected and analyzed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency.
The recalled romaine products were distributed to retail locations in Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Georgia, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, Washington, Puerto Rico and Canada. Symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 infection may include abdominal cramps and diarrhea which is often bloody. Most infected people recover within a week; however, some may develop complications that require hospitalization. Young children and the elderly are at highest risk for a potentially life-threatening complication known as hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which includes kidney failure.
People who develop symptoms of E. coli O157:H7 infection after consuming Tanimura & Antle romaine lettuce should consult their health care provider.
Consumers that observe the product being offered for sale are encouraged to report their findings to the CDPH toll free complaint line at (800) 495-3232.
