Orange County confirms one new death

Orange County Health Department officials confirmed to KnightNews.com Thursday the swine flu turned deadly for a man in Orange County.

This case, which involved a 57-year-old male, brings the total number of swine flu, or H1N1, related deaths to 12 in Orange County since this new strain of flu was identified in April, officials said.

A total of 389 hospitalized persons or persons in intensive care units (ICU) with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 were reported from week 17 (ending 5/2/09) to week 45 (ending 11/14/09) in Sacramento County. During week 45 an additional 30 hospitalized persons or persons in intensive care units were reported.

As of November 14, 2009 the majority of laboratory confirmed H1N1 hospitalized persons or persons in intensive care units were between the ages of 25 to 49 years (32.8%), followed by persons ages 5 to 24
years (24.9%). A total of 75.3% (3 out of 4) H1N1 hospitalized persons or persons in intensive care units were less than 50 years of age.

As of November 14, 2009 nineteen Sacramento County residents with H1N1 influenza have died. Of the nineteen H1N1 deaths 4 were not hospitalized. During week 45, 3 H1N1 confirmed deaths were reported. All 3 deaths occurred at the residents homes.

From the report:

The total number of positive flu tests decreased in week 45, however, the percent of flu tests that tested positive increased (Figure 1). Parainfluenza 1 and rhinovirus have also been identified in LAC (see In The News). Twenty-five new ILI (influenza-like illness) outbreaks (17 in elementary schools, 7 in other schools, and 1 in a skilled nursing facility) were reported during week 45. The percent of emergency department visits due to ILI noticeably decreased
but still is substantially higher relative to the same time in previous years (Figure 2).

Since the beginning of the pandemic in April there have been a total of 178 ICU admissions and 86 deaths due to laboratory confirmed H1N1; since the beginning of the 2009-2010 flu season on August 30, there have been 34 deaths due to laboratory confirmed influenza of any type.

Hospitalizations: A total of 42 Placer County residents have been hospitalized with probable
or confirmed pandemic H1N1 influenza since August 18, 2009. Two hospitalized case were
pregnant women. There have been no reported hospitalized cases among healthcare workers.
Of all reported hospitalized cases, 50% were 35 years of age and under. The age range of
cases is between 1 month and 77 years. The median age of cases is 35 years. Hospitalizations
for H1N1 continue to increase among Placer County residents. There have been 4 pandemic
H1N1 deaths among Placer County residents since April, 2009.

Los Angeles County (LAC) The total number of positive flu tests as well as he % of flu tests that tested positive decreased in week 48. While the % of RSV tests that tested positive decreased relative to week 47, it remains high compared to earlier weeks. Six new ILI (influenza-like illness) outbreaks (3 in elementary schools, 2 in assisted living facilities, and 1 in a nursing home) were reported during week 48 (Table 1). The % of emergency department (ED) visits due to ILI continued to decrease but remains higher relative to the same time in previous years for all ages (Figure 2). However, the % of ED visits due to ILI among persons 5-14 years of age has returned to levels normally expected during this time of year (Figure 3). Since the beginning of the pandemic in April, there have been 297 ICU/deaths due to H1N1 of which 102 have been deaths.

Current Santa Cruz County, California Case Count

H1N1 influenza is now widespread in our community. Health care providers are no longer being asked to report outpatient cases as it is estimated that there are many more cases than have been tested. Severe (meaning hospitalized or fatal) cases are still reportable.

As of Dec. 4, 2009:

39 hospitalized (more than 24 hours) probable or confirmed Pandemic (H1N1) 2009 cases

10 were admitted to an Intensive Care Unit

The County of San Diego Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) reports five additional people have died and tested positive for H1N1. This does not mean H1N1 has been determined to be the cause of death, which is established by the attending physician or the Medical Examiner. The deceased are:

A 36-year-old female with underlying medical conditions
A 54-year-old male with underlying medical conditions
An 11-year-old female with underlying medical conditions
A 16-year-old female with underlying medical conditions
A 54-year-old female with underlying medical conditions

The total number of people who have tested positive for H1N1 and died locally is 52. Forty-five individuals were San Diego County residents while the other seven were non-residents visiting our community at the time of their death. San Diego County has had 713 hospitalized cases of H1N1 to date.
