City of Santa Clara Temporarily Closes Nuevo Dog Park Following Illness Reports

Over the past two months, the City of Santa Clara has received multiple reports of dogs becoming ill after visiting Nuevo Dog Park, located at Ryder Street and La Rambla Avenue. Most recently, during the week of July 28, we were notified of a dog that sadly passed away after a visit to the park. We extend our heartfelt sympathies to the pet’s family — we understand that pets are cherished members of our community.
The health and safety of Santa Clara residents, including their four-legged companions, is a top priority. In response to these reports, the City is launching a thorough environmental assessment of Nuevo Dog Park. We do not use pesticides in any of our dog parks, and all are regularly cleaned with pet- and eco-friendly products. We are taking these concerns seriously.
As a precautionary measure, Nuevo Dog Park has been temporarily closed and will remain closed until further notice while testing is completed.

The city says it is working to schedule testing at the park after another visiting dog suffered seizures.
A local veternarian says they’ve seen a pattern too. His first suspicion is some sort of toxin.
"Toxins first and foremost, that's the biggest thing I kind of see," said Dr. Tal Solomon, a veterinarian with ArchVet. "I usually think about either some kind of toxin in a dog park, mushrooms, who knows, snail baits, fertilizers or whatnot."

Juliana Martinez said her dog Ozzy suffered seizures after visiting Nuevo in June.

Benji and his owner also visited the dog park in June. The 4-year old Aussie had a seizure and died the same day.
A month later, Boba’s owner told NBC Bay Area he had a seizure and spent four days at a vet hospital. He survived, but only after $20,000 in care.
