Merced County flu death raises Valley toll to 25

Merced County health officials reported a fourth influenza-related death Thursday.

The latest death in Merced County was a man between the ages of 20 and 60, county Health Director Kathleen Grassi said. The county's three previous deaths also were males in that age range.

Family of 'healthy' Calif. woman who died from H1N1 encourages flu shots

The family of a California woman who died Saturday from complications caused by the H1N1 flu is urging others to get their flu shots.

Nancy Pinnella, a 47-year-old sales account manager at Sacramento?s News10, left work on Jan. 21 because she didn?t feel well. She went to the doctor on Jan. 22, and was taken to the hospital that night, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Wayne Kodama, a beloved longtime Fresno dentist and founder of Healthy Smiles Mobile Dental Foundation, died last week from flu complications. He was 52.Dr. Kodama didn't get a flu shot, said his wife, Susan Kodama, who is now urging everyone to get one -- even those who consider themselves healthy, like her husband did."He never had a cold, he never had a flu, he was never sick," Susan said. "He never missed a day of work, never."Dr. Kodama had the flu for about three days before it turned into a bad cough, Susan said. He got treatment about a week later and was hospitalized for two weeks before he died Jan. 24. Doctors suspect his death was related to H3N5, a relatively new flu strain, Susan said.

Hospitalized flu patients rise to 91 in Sacramento County; death toll at 21 under age 65


When Sacramento County public health officer Dr. Olivia Kasirye visited News10 studios last week at the invitation of co-workers concerned about a colleague?s sudden death from the flu, she was hit by a barrage of questions:

?What is this flu??

?Why is it acting so differently??

?Why does it take the life of someone so young and healthy??

Kasirye could see the crew was not only anxious about getting the flu themselves, but they were grieving. And, to some extent, so too was the community. Word had spread quickly through social media about the death of Nancy Pinnella, 47, an otherwise healthy News10 ad executive who recently succumbed to the flu. Even California?s first lady, Anne Gust Brown, tweeted that she was so moved by Pinnella?s story, she went to get her first flu shot ever.

Since then, things have gotten worse. Three more people have died in Sacramento County, bringing the flu fatality count of those under 65 years old to 21. That compares to 16 dead (under 65) in the county last season, and there are several weeks yet to go in the current flu season, which may extend through March, Kasirye said. State law does not require hospitals to report deaths of residents 65 and up, but county officials confirmed that two in that age group also had died.

Sacramento County updates flu death toll to 24 this season

Sacramento County public health officials today updated the number of flu fatalities in the county to 24 residents, three more than were reported on Monday. Thirteen of the victims were women and 11 were men.

A total of 98 patients have been hospitalized in intensive care units throughout the county during the 2013-2014 flu season.

The predominant strain is still the H1N1 influenza A virus, one which Dr. Sam Louie of UC Davis Medical Center said has ?surprised everybody? with its virulence.

A Sacramento family continues to mourn the death of their father and husband after he died due to complications from the H1N1 flu.

Leon Burns, 38, went to the hospital three weeks ago. There doctors immediately knew he was fighting the H1N1 virus.

"His lungs were going; his kidneys failed," Burns' wife Tanisha Burns explained. "[Doctors] tried to do dialysis on him ? that didn't work. His breathing started going."...

Fresno County's 18th flu-related death brings Valley toll to 30


Fresno County health officials said Monday that a man in his 20s with health problems died of influenza. He is the 18th flu-related death in Fresno County and the 30th death in the central San Joaquin Valley.

The latest death was from the H1N1 influenza A virus, also called swine flu. The virus has been associated with almost all of the flu deaths reported in the Valley. California requires hospitals to report influenza deaths of people under age 65.

Mother With H1N1 Recovers, To Be Released from Hospital

Rhea Tosta can call herself a survivor.

Tosta, 31, a single mother of two small children, checked herself into an area hospital?s emergency room Jan. 19 following a birthday party for one of her kids. She was quickly placed into critical care and treated for H1N1.

After nearly a month in the hospital, doctors now say the virus is gone, Tosta said.

?I truly appreciate all the people out there. I received lots of prayers that had a lot to do with the fact that I am here now. I?m thankful for the support, prayers and the hospital staff was wonderful. And my amazing stepmom Gina for standing by my side,? she said.

3 more flu-related deaths in Fresno County; Valley toll reaches 33

Fresno County health officials reported three flu-related deaths Tuesday.

The latest deaths bring to 21 the number of people who have died of influenza in Fresno County.

So far this flu season, 33 people have died in the central San Joaquin Valley. Kings and Merced counties have had four deaths each, and Madera and Tulare counties have had two each.

Of the deaths reported Tuesday by Fresno County, one was a woman in her 50s with no medical problems to increase her risk of complications from influenza, county health officials said.

The other two deaths were men in their 50s. One of the men had medical problems, but the other had no underlying medical conditions.

We are peaking down now and many are being discharged, now. We have 1.45 million people in Sacramento County. Living and watching this in the Sacramento Area, I personally have known too many that got vaccine and were hospitalized. I know it sounds like many, but lets scale down the media coverage and there is no comparison this to last year. We had young and elderly. This year in this county the majority were 40-64. It is now a mute point for the vaccine.

Kings, Merced counties report flu deaths; 36th in central San Joaquin Valley

Health officials in Kings and Merced on Thursday reported flu-related deaths.

The deaths raised the total to 36 in the central San Joaquin Valley, including five in Kings and Merced. Fresno County has had 22 deaths and Madera and Tulare counties have had two deaths each.

Fresno County officials have said this is the worst flu season in the five years since California has required hospitals to report influenza deaths of children and adults younger than age 65...

Family prepares to take mother off life support after H1N1

ROSEVILLE, Calif. - The family of a Granite Bay woman who got the H1N1 strain of the flu is preparing to take her off life support.

Lesley Bunning, 61, could become the latest casualty of this year's flu season. To date, more than 200 people across California, including 26 people in Sacramento County, have died due to the flu.

On life support at Kasier's Roseville hospital, Bunning will have to be taken off a specialized ventilator and put back onto the standard one because long-term use of the specialized one can cause complications.

"We're hoping and praying for a miracle," Lesley's husband Bernard Bunning said. "Absent a miracle, I'm going to lose my wife."

Placerville Woman Survives H1N1

A Placerville woman is happy to have survived, after weeks of battling the influenza virus.

After spending 30 days in the hospital, Renata Cooper is recovering after the H1N1 swine flu virus nearly took her life. News10 reports at one point - the woman's heart actually stopped beating and had to be revived. Now that she's home recuperating - Cooper says credits her husband for saving her life.

She had pneumonia and the H1N1 virus. Doctors performed emergency surgery on her to drain fluid from her body that was stopping her organs and keeping her from breathing. Now she's back home and wants to let people know there is hope for survival from this killer flu.
