Federal Criminal Court Put On Hold By H1N1

The Fresno County Sheriff's Office has announced that 11 inmates at the county jail have come down with cases of the H1N1 virus.

Sheriff's spokesman Chris Curtice said nine males and one female who tested positive for the virus strain are being housed in isolation pods at the jail.

One of the inmates, 60-year-old Francisco Rosales Gamboa, died earlier this week from the virus.

"We've identified five different areas where inmates have come from who contracted the H1N1 virus, so we've got those areas on lock down," Curtice said.

Another flu-related death in Fresno County

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) -- Another death in the Valley is now linked to the H1N1 flu virus. This latest death is in Fresno County, which now stands at five deadly flu cases. Kings County has three reported deaths. And Merced County also has three deadly cases.

Emergency rooms are inundated with flu cases. So, for the most part kids are no longer allowed to visit patients at several local hospitals. And health officials warn that very simple preventative action can save your life.

Genevieve Cano walks around Adventist Medical Center in Hanford with her own protection. "Well because I go around people coughing and I say danger zone," Cano said. "It's very scary."

Flu takes 45 lives so far in California; Sacramento County counts 11 deaths locally

Sacramento County officials Friday updated the local death toll from the flu to 11 people, ranging in age from 18 to 64. Last year at this time, four county residents had died of influenza, which usually tends to hit people over 65 and very young children, thought to be the populations most vulnerable to severe flu viruses.

North Highlands man dies of complications brought on by flu

NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. - Alberto Ricaforte had never been in the hospital in his life.

"He was perfectly healthy, no sickness, never been in an emergency room or ICU once," his son Kenny Ricaforte said at his North Highlands home Friday night.

Albert, a lab worker at a Kaiser hospital in Roseville, got a fever just before Christmas. As he got sicker, he resisted his family's entreaties to go to the doctor, until he got even worse.

Flu stops visits at Tulare County jails

Visits to all Tulare County jails have been temporarily suspended effective immediately.

Sheriff Mike Boudreaux has suspended the visits in an attempt to minimize the possible exposure of the potential flu virus H1N1 to the inmate population, their families, jail staff, volunteers and the public. The action is being taken in accordance with information provided by Corizon Health, medical services providers for Tulare County Criminal Justice.

The Sheriff?s Department is working with the inmates to help provide communication to their family members to prevent them from unnecessary trips to the facilities and to make sure their families have a point of contact to verify whether or not visiting has resumed. The Department is also setting up phone numbers that will provide a voice message regarding the status of visiting at the detention facilities.

Sacramento County?s flu deaths rise to 14, county officials report

Despite unseasonably mild weather, Sacramento County has logged another three deaths due to severe influenza, health officials said Wednesday, bringing the death toll so far to 14, just two shy of last year?s end-of-season count of 16.

With several more weeks remaining in the peak flu season, 74 people were hospitalized with life-threatening, flu-like symptoms in intensive care units throughout the area, county public health officials said, an increase of 10 people over the 64 reported hospitalized last Friday.

Of the deceased, seven were men and seven were women, county officials said. Some suffered from underlying medical conditions such as cancer and diabetes, which may have left them with weakened immune systems.

All those who died were between 18 and 64 years old, underscoring that the H1N1 flu virus prevalent this year is unusual in that it has not struck the very young or the very old, populations typically seen as most vulnerable to severe influenza.
