This is the first local case of suspected Ebola since August 2014, when a patient at Kaiser's South Sacramento Medical Center was tested out of abundance of caution. Results were negative. Kaiser's South Sacramento hospital is the other local facility on the national list of Ebola centers.

In August, testing took 24 to 48 hours. Since then, Sacramento County officials applied for Ebola testing certification that would cut wait times to as little as four hours, so results could come sooner this time around.

State of California?Health and Human Services Agency
California Department of Public Health
RON CHAPMAN, MD, MPH EDMUND G. BROWN JR.
Director & State Health Officer Governor
January 29, 2015

Statement from Dr. Gil Chavez, State Epidemiologist and Deputy Director, Center for
Infectious Diseases, California Department of Public Health:

As has been explained by the U.C. Davis Medical Center in Sacramento, a patient is
currently being evaluated there for Ebola. It is important to note that this patient has not
been confirmed for Ebola. Whenever there is a person displaying symptoms that may
be Ebola, who has recently traveled to Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea, certain
precautions are taken including isolating the patient, ruling out other infectious diseases,
and testing for Ebola if warranted. The California Department of Public Health, in
coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sacramento County
Public Health and U.C. Davis Medical Center, is ensuring that all protocols are in place
to protect the public health and will continue to closely monitor the situation.

State and local public health and hospital officials have confirmed that the patient transported by specialized ambulance and admitted to UC Davis Medical Center early Thursday who exhibited symptoms consistent with a viral illness including Ebola, and with a history of travel to an Ebola-affected country, has tested negative for the Ebola virus.

?We will continue to work together with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with hospitals and local health departments across California to quickly identify individuals who could potentially be at risk of Ebola, and take quick action in order to protect the health and safety of all California residents,? said California Department of Public Health State Epidemiologist and Deputy Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, Dr. Gil Chavez.

?The expediency of this investigation also preserves resources and allows staff to resume other investigations,? said Sacramento County Health Officer, Dr. Olivia Kasirye.

The test for Ebola done by the Sacramento County Public Health Laboratory came back negative last night.

?The patient remains in good condition and we will continue to provide ongoing medical care,? said J. Douglas Kirk, Chief Medical Officer at UC Davis Medical Center.

At this time, there have been no confirmed cases of Ebola in California and there is no threat to the general public. Ebola symptoms may appear anywhere between two to 21 days after exposure and include a fever, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain and lack of appetite. Travelers from Africa may experience flu-like or GI symptoms due to malaria or other non-Ebola associated diseases.

Health agencies elect not to mention possible Ebola case

Patient at Kaiser South tests negative for Ebola virus

UPDATED 8:43 PM PST Jan 30, 2015

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) ?When state and county health officials spoke to KCRA 3 and other media outlets this week about a possible case of Ebola at UC Davis Medical Center, they chose not to mention that a second patient -- at Kaiser South -- was also being tested.

A patient at Kaiser South hospital in Sacramento has tested negative for Ebola, health officials said Friday.

The public finally learned that a second person was being tested after news media heard of the patient and started asking questions.

On Friday, two days after the patient was admitted at Kaiser South, the hospital released a written statement, confirming that the patient was being tested for Ebola.

In both cases, the tests came back negative. But, the sequence of events prompted new questions about why public health officials didn't mention the Kaiser patient Thursday, the day they were talking with dozens of news media outlets from around the country about the patient at UC Davis.

SACRAMENTO

Dr. Gil Chavez, State Epidemiologist and Deputy Director, Center for Infectious Diseases, California Department of Public Health (CDPH) today confirmed that a patient admitted to Kaiser Permanente South Sacramento Medical Center on Wednesday evening who exhibited symptoms consistent with a viral illness including Ebola, and with a history of travel to an Ebola-affected country, has tested negative for the Ebola virus.

State and local health officials have been working hard with California?s Ebola Treatment Centers to safely and effectively identify, isolate, diagnose and treat suspect Ebola patients. This recent case at Kaiser South illustrates that our hard work and partnership has paid off,? said Dr. Chavez.

The test for Ebola conducted by the Sacramento County Public Health Laboratory came back negative early this afternoon.

Whenever there is a person displaying symptoms that may be Ebola, who has recently traveled to Sierra Leone, Liberia or Guinea, certain precautions are taken including isolating the patient, ruling out other infectious diseases, and testing for Ebola if warranted. The California Department of Public Health, in coordination with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Sacramento County Public Health and Kaiser South Sacramento, worked together to ensure protocols were in place to protect the public health.
