Los Angeles County has reported its second probable case of monkeypox as California’s total probable case tally rises to 12..

The L.A. County Department of Public Health said the latest case occurred in an adult who recently traveled. “They are symptomatic but doing well and isolating away from others,” officials said in a statement Wednesday.

L.A. County’s first suspected monkeypox case — which was first reported last week and has since been confirmed by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention — is not related to the suspected case reported on Wednesday, L.A. County Public Health Director Barbara Ferrer said.

San Francisco reported three additional probable cases of monkeypox on Thursday, meaning the city has reported a total of four probable cases — two of whom have traveled recently, while the other two have not.

Also on Thursday, Alameda County announced its first probable case of monkeypox.

Sacramento County has reported at least five confirmed and suspected monkeypox cases, according to the California Department of Public Health.

By Laura Haefeli
June 16, 2022 at 10:12 pm

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A sixth and seventh case of monkeypox was found in Sacramento County, and unlike the first five cases, these new cases are related to travel within the United States.

“There’s just a lot going on the last couple of years. It’s just annoying,” said Sean Wilson, who’s traveling from Sacramento to Alaska.

But anxiety has once again set in after the Sacramento County Department of Public Health confirmed there are now seven monkeypox cases in the area.

“We have no proof of casual transmission. It appears to be prolonged contact with people, and so we’re not expecting this to have widespread transmission like we did with COVID,” said Dr. Dean Blumber, a UC Davis infectious disease expert...

“We are investigating the circumstances surrounding the case to determine the best course of action moving forward,” said Leung. “Given that there have been other probable cases in the region it is not surprising that we would have one in Riverside County...

MONKEYPOX
...

The current monkeypox situation is rapidly evolving and the information below will be updated as new information emerges. CDPH is closely monitoring monkeypox transmission in the U.S. and California to ensure rapid identification of cases. The risk of monkeypox to the public is currently very low based on the information available.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) issued a health advisory on May 20, 2022 and June 14, 2022 regarding a confirmed case of monkeypox virus infection in Massachusetts as well as multiple clusters of monkeypox virus infections in other countries that do not usually have monkeypox cases. While monkeypox can infect anyone, many of the recent cases in 2022 have occurred among persons self-identifying as men who have sex with men (MSM).

Additionally, CDPH issued an updated advisory on May 27 and also issued an advisory on May 20 to health care providers to immediately notify their local health jurisdiction (LHJ) of any potential cases.

LA County confirms local transmission of monkeypox
By Georgina Taylor
June 25, 2022

Los Angeles County has confirmed local transmission of monkeypox, health officials said Friday, June 24, with some recently identified patients having no history of recent travel that might account for their infections — and some having attended large events that may have spread the illness.

There were 22 cases of monkeypox in the county, as of Friday, and health officials said some recent infections have occurred “among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred.”

LA County health officials said they are working with organizers of the unspecified events to notify people of possible exposures...

Public Health Confirms Community Transmission of Monkeypox in LA County; Details Vaccination Efforts

Public Health has confirmed local transmission of monkeypox in LA County, as some of the more recent of the 22 cases of monkeypox in LA County thus far have no history of international or out-of-state travel. There have been no hospitalizations or deaths.

Anyone can get and spread monkeypox, but some of the recent cases identified have been among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men who attended large events where the exposure to monkeypox may have occurred. Public Health is working with event organizers to notify attendees of potential exposure.

While supplies of monkeypox vaccine are limited, Public Health is offering the JYNNEOS vaccine in a targeted manner to reach individuals at higher risk of monkeypox. This includes people who are known close contacts to someone diagnosed with monkeypox and individuals who attended an event where they may have had skin-to-skin contact with someone who later tested positive for monkeypox virus. The vaccine is being used in these cases to reduce the risk of developing monkeypox.

As vaccine supply increases, Public Health will focus on making the monkeypox vaccine available for other high-risk groups in efforts to prevent widespread community transmission.

Monkeypox does not spread easily between people. The spread of monkeypox from person to person can occur through contact with body fluids, monkeypox sores, items that have been contaminated with fluids or sores (like clothing or linens), or through prolonged exposure to respiratory droplets. Because of this, transmission may also occur during sex through skin-to-skin and other intimate contact.

LA County encourages persons who experience symptoms consistent with monkeypox (such as characteristic rashes or lesions), persons who traveled to countries where monkeypox cases have been reported or persons who have had close contact, including sexual contact, with someone who has a similar rash or received a diagnosis of suspected or confirmed monkeypox, to contact their health care provider for a risk assessment. Those who do not have a regular provider should call 2-1-1 for assistance.
