Two local students among 26 new whooping cough cases

Two local cases are among the 26 new cases of pertussis the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency confirmed last week. The local cases are a 12-year-old at Twin Peaks Middle School in Poway who was not up-to-date on immunizations and a 17-year-old at Westview High School in Rancho Penasquitos. It has identified 14 locations in the county where others may have been exposed to the disease...

Confirmed influenza deaths of Californians under the age of 65 reached 202 this week, state health officials said.

Speaking with reporters Friday, California Department of Public Health communicable disease control chief Dr. James Watt also reported the death of an infant in Riverside County from pertussis.

The child's death marks the first whooping cough fatality since 2010, the last time the disease peaked in the state. That year, more than 9,100 cases of pertussis were reported in California, with 10 deaths...

Fresno County sees dramatic rise in whooping cough cases

Riverside County officials are urging parents to get their young children vaccinated for pertussis after this year?s first confirmed death from the illness.

The death marks the first time since 2010 that there?s been a pertussis-related fatality in the State of California. The 2-month-old infant who fell ill had not been vaccinated and his mother had not received a booster while pregnant, according to county health officials...

...Barbara Cole, director of disease control at the Riverside County Department of Public Health, said that there were 10 confirmed cases of pertussis in the county as of Thursday, Feb. 13.

That may not seem like much, but it could be an indication of a greater problem, according to officials at the California Department of Public Health. They say that monthly reports indicate that pertussis cases are on the rise.

Yearly cases of whooping cough have been on a downward trend since the epidemic of 2010, when there more than 9,000 reported cases and 10 deaths in the state...

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - Ten people who were up to date on their vaccinations came down with pertussis recently and health officials said this week that San Diego County was on pace toward having its worst year for "whooping cough" cases since 2010.

The recent outbreaks pushed this year's tally to 266, compared with just 51 cases reported by this date one year ago and 430 cases reported in all of 2013, according to the county Health and Human Services Agency. In 2010, 1,179 cases were reported...

Contra Costa County sees spike in whooping cough cases

Contra Costa County has seen a jump in the amount of whooping cough cases this year, with nine cases of the disease found in just one school.

In fact, in Martinez, all but two of the schools have seen confirmed cases. Morello Park Elementary was the school with nine cases, the highest number in the county so far...

Cases of pertussis, a potentially deadly disease also known as whooping cough, are on the rise in Napa County this year, Napa County's top health official said.

Napa County Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith said 17 cases have been reported so far this year, nine of them in the last two weeks.

There were 13 pertussis cases in Napa County in all of 2013. All but three of this year's 17 reported cases have been in children of middle or high school age, Smith said...

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (KCRA) ?Health officials said Sacramento County is experiencing an outbreak of pertussis, which causes a loud gasping whooping cough.

The Sacramento County officials reported 69 confirmed case this year. In 2013, about 59 cases were reported for the entire calendar year.

Eleven of the 69 are young children and many are teenagers, the health department said...

SAN DIEGO (CNS) - The number of pertussis cases reported in San Diego County since Jan. 1 has surpassed the total for all of last year, the county Health and Human Services Agency announced Tuesday.

More than 100 cases of the illness also known as whooping cough have been confirmed recently, bringing this year's count to 454, according to the HHSA. In all of 2013, 431 cases of the illness were reported.

The recent high for a full year was 1,179 cases in 2010...
