Two elderly patients have died following an outbreak of contagious norovirus that sickened them and 57 other people at The Redwoods residential care facility in Mill Valley.

Marin County Public Health Officer Dr. Matthew Willis reported Friday that the two died at Marin General Hospital where they were taken after falling ill, and that while norovirus may have contributed, it cannot be regarded as the cause of the deaths.

At least one of the patients was a "comfort care" case near the end of life, he added...

LAFAYETTE -- A suspected norovirus outbreak at a Lafayette elementary school this past week -- one of 10 active cases in Contra Costa County -- has health officials reminding residents to take precautions to avoid the contagious bug in the final months of the flu season.

The outbreak is one of the largest so far in Contra Costa County in a season that Bay Area health leaders say has otherwise been typical.

More than 100 students at Burton Valley Elementary School were absent on Friday -- 10 times the number of absences on a typical day. Many reported symptoms similar to norovirus.

Principals notified parents on Friday, and custodians spent the weekend scrubbing classrooms. School officials have not pinpointed the origin of the outbreak or confirmed it as norovirus but are working with county health leaders and monitoring other Lafayette School District schools.

An unusual number of students have been absent from Stanley Middle School, which has many students with siblings attending Burton Valley.

An outbreak of contagious norovirus appears to have ended after sickening scores of seniors at the Redwoods residential care center in Mill Valley.

Most routines were scheduled to resume Friday after several days without a new case of the disease. "There haven't been any cases in three days," he said. "There's no one sick right now."

Two elderly patients died and 78 other residents and staff members were sickened, including seven who got the illness twice, in an outbreak that began Dec. 24.

The Redwoods' outbreak comes after an outbreak at Villa Marin in San Rafael that sickened 27 people in November, as well as a wave of illness that hit 14 people who attended a business party in Mill Valley.

Norovirus Outbreak Closes Concord Deli

The North Park Deli was closed Tuesday by Contra Costa environmental health officials.

A Concord deli has been closed by Contra Costa County environmental health officials due to norovirus contamination.

Marilyn Underwood, environmental health department director, said the North Park Deli on Nelson Avenue was shut down late Tuesday afternoon. It's uncertain when the eatery will re-open.

Underwood said two employees at the deli have tested positive for the virus.

She said her department was first notified of the illness when 15 people who were at an event catered by North Park Deli on Friday evening became sick over the weekend.

The North Park Deli on Nelson Avenue was shut down Tuesday, three days after employees there catered an event and more than 100 people ate the food they prepared, said Marilyn Underwood, the county's Director of Environmental Health. But a thorough cleaning of the restaurant convinced the agency it was ready for reopening.

By lunchtime Thursday, a dozen people were waiting in line and many tables were occupied.

At least 45 people who attended the event have reported norovirus symptoms, Underwood said. The health agency is trying to interview them all, she said, so they can determined what procedures may or may not have been followed.

Walnut Creek steakhouse reopens after norovirus outbreak

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?

A steakhouse in Contra Costa County was shut down earlier this week because of a norovirus outbreak, but it reopened Friday night.

County health officials closed Fleming's Steakhouse from Wednesday until Friday after they said the norovirus sickened several employees and at least two customers.

Possible norovirus outbreak strikes Sacramento care facilities

Twenty people at Carlton Plaza Sacramento and 14 people at Crown Plaza Sacramento, both on Fulton Avenue, have been experiencing illness symptomatic of norovirus, according to Laura McCasland with the Sacramento County Department of Health and Human Services. Laboratory test results have not yet come back to confirm the illness.

No one has died. One patient was taken to the ER for evaluation, McCasland said.

Sacramento County public health officials are investigating Mulvaney's B&L restaurant as the source of a possible norovirus outbreak in late February.

The investigation centers on diners who ate at the popular midtown restaurant on Feb. 23 and Feb. 25-26. The county Department of Health and Human Services received 20 reports of customers falling ill shortly after those days and launched the inquiry. Given that Mulvaney's has a 100-person seating capacity, hundreds of patrons may have been exposed.

(11-14) 11:03 PST STANFORD -- A recent outbreak of stomach illness at Stanford University was probably caused by norovirus, health investigators said Thursday.

Although tests did not confirm the presence of the highly contagious virus, the Santa Clara County Public Health Department reported that norovirus was the most reasonable explanation for why dozens of students were sickened at a campus residence hall.

Between Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, 62 students reported flu-like symptoms, including vomiting and diarrhea, health officials said.

County health investigation closes, norovirus likely cause of stomach illness

The Santa Clara County Public Health Department has officially completed its investigation on the cause of the gastrointestinal illness that afflicted students in Florence Moore Hall (FloMo) late October. No conclusions were drawn on the original source of the outbreak, but health officials state norovirus was likely the cause.

?We know the county did an exhaustive investigation, but sometimes it?s not possible to get an exact source,? said Lisa Lapin, University spokeswoman.

Between the afternoon of Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, a total of 62 residents from FloMo?two of whom were faculty?reported stomach-flu-like symptoms, including vomiting and in some cases, diarrhea, Lapin said. Seven students were eventually treated at Stanford Hospital for dehydration and released.

These numbers do not include the cases of the same symptoms of illness in Wilbur Hall. However, it cannot be assumed these cases were spread from the FloMo cases, said Ira Friedman, director of Vaden Health Center, who emphasized that norovirus is extremely common at this time of year.
