1 death reported (adult between the ages of 40-49 years from central California who had multiple co-morbid conditions. The patient tested positive for influenza A by rapid test.)

Outpatient influenza-like illness (ILI) decreased 0.8% in Week 48 (0.7%) compared to Week 47 (1.5%).
2.2% positive for influenza
CDPH has received no reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks during the 2012–2013 influenza season.

Outpatient influenza-like illness (ILI) increased 0.5% in Week 52 (1.8%) compared to Week 51 (1.3%).
Of 3695 specimens tested during Week 51 and Week 52, (7.9%) were positive for influenza virus. The percentage of influenza detections in the RLN and sentinel laboratories increased in Weeks 51 (5.8%) and 52 (10.0%).

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not strain-typed any California specimens to date.
One influenza-associated death in an adult less than 65 years of age was reported during Week 52.
No cases of novel influenza have been detected in California to date.

The percentage of hospitalizations for pneumonia and influenza (P&I) in Kaiser Permanente facilities in northern California increased during Week 51 (4.7%) and again during Week 52 (6.2%), compared to Week 50 (4.2%). The percentage increased to above baseline during Week 52.

A total of five influenza-associated deaths among adults less than 65 years of age have been reported to CDPH to date during the 2012?2013 influenza season. The deaths were reported from the Sacramento metropolitan area (1), the Visalia-Porterville Metropolitan Area in the Central Valley (1), the Inland Empire (1), and the Greater Los Angeles Area (2).

ILI: 5.4%, compared to Week 1 (5.3%)
21.7% positive for influenza; majority A

The percentage of hospitalizations for pneumonia and influenza (P&I) in Kaiser Permanente facilities in northern California decreased during Week 2 (7.0%), compared to Week 1 (7.5%). The percentage remained at the epidemic threshold (7.0%) during Week 2.

CDPH received three reports of laboratory-confirmed influenza outbreaks during Week 2. All three outbreaks occurred in congregate living facilities and were associated with influenza A. Subtyping performed on specimens from one of the three outbreaks identified influenza A (H3); total 3 outbreaks.

San Diego sees record number of flu deaths, may be due to H3N2

The number of influenza-related deaths in San Diego has hit 60, breaking the record of 58 fatalities seen during the 2009-2010 H1N1 pandemic, according to a San Diego County news release April 3.

According to county health officials, most of the deaths have been seen in elderly people with underlying health conditions. Although most cases have been seen in the elderly population, other people like pregnant women and children are also at higher risk of serious complications.

There were 16 flu A and 36 flu B and 6 either A or B cases detected that week - no deaths reported that I can find for week 13, though total deaths for the season were 60. ER ILI's are currently trending down toward baseline.

San Diego County's population in 2012 was estimated to be about 3,177,063 out of a total population for the state of CA of 38,041,430.

There were also three deaths from obituaries that were over age 65, which aren't reportable in California. Doubtless there were many more older patients who died, so the total is likely much higher.
