SAN DIEGO - The number of whooping cough cases around San Diego County remains significant, but is on an early pace to be about half of last year's record total, the county Health and Human Services Agency reported Wednesday.

So far, there have been 47 cases of the disease, also known as pertussis, diagnosed around the county since the beginning of the year, according to the HHSA...

The number of pertussis cases in the region jumped to 55 in 2011. Last year, whooping cough cases reached a record-high of 1,140 which included two infant deaths...

The new pertussis cases reported this week are:

* An 11-year-old who was due for a booster shot and attends Bear Valley Middle School in the Escondido Union School District.
* A 4-year-old who was due for a fifth dose of DTaP and attends La Costa Valley Preschool and Kindergarten, a private school in Carlsbad.

...According to the Calaveras County Public Health Department, three cases of whooping cough have already been reported in 2011.

The cases include a two month old infant in the Angels Camp area who has been hospitalized and two school aged youth in the Valley Springs/Burson area...

Whooping cough cases are declining but remain high in California nearly a year after the largest epidemic since 1950 struck the state in mid-2010.

The California Department of Public Health updated totals show that as of Wednesday there had been 2,164 cases of whooping cough in 2011.

No deaths have been reported so far this year. Last year, the Latino community in California had been hard-hit especially by the recent epidemic of whooping cough that killed 10 infants, nine of them Hispanic...

  • A 13-year-old who was up-to-date with immunizations and attends Innovation Middle School the in San Diego Unified School District.
  • A 3-year-old who was up-to-date with immunizations and attends Coast Kids Preschool in Carlsbad.
  • A 6-year-old who was due for another immunization and attends Willow Elementary School in the San Ysidro School District.
