Chickenpox outbreak at west county schools

At outbreak of Chickenpox in western Nevada County schoolchildren has health officials asking parents to keep infected children home and get them vaccinated.

?The vast majority of these students were not vaccinated,? according to a press release issued Monday by the Nevada County Health and Human Services Agency.

Many Nevada County residents do not vaccinate their children for personal reasons or fears they will cause maladies.

The schools where cases have shown up are the Yuba River Charter School and at least one other school in the Pleasant Ridge Union School District, according to Cindy Watson of the county Public Health Department.

Schools with known cases have sent letters to parents and guardians notifying them of the outbreak, the release said.

?The disease starts with a mild fever and general feeling of tiredness quickly followed by a blistering rash that spreads across the body,? according to the release.

Chicken Pox Outbreak Reported In Nevada County


NEVADA CITY, Calif. (CBS13) - An outbreak of chicken pox has been reported in Nevada County, but some parents say they are reluctant to get immunizations for their children.

Public Health Director Dr. Karen Milman said the number of chicken pox cases has tripled in a single month, and many more cases are expected.

"It's a situation we're concerned about and monitoring," Milman said. "This is a highly contagious illness."

Officials said the outbreak apparently started at Yuba River Charter School, where 21 kids were infected. When the disease spread to surrounding schools, that number quickly ballooned to 64.

Yuba River Charter School officials declined to comment to CBS13.

The aggressive disease usually manifests in children with symptoms such as fever, fatigue, rash, and pimple-like blisters. Children usually get better in a few weeks, but the consequences for adults can be much more serious.

"Chicken pox in older adults and pregnant women can be very dangerous," Dr. Milman said.

Dr. Milman said her department encourages all children to be vaccinated, but some parents in the community said they refuse to do so.

"Some vaccinations are actually harming our children," said Jolianne Vannberg. "We as a family, me and my boyfriend, opted not to vaccinate."

Other parents said they believed vaccination is the responsible thing to do, to keep everyone safe.

"I believe in getting them vaccinated. I've always gotten my children vaccinated," said Marilyn Hintz.

County officials said they just concerned about children sharing toys, but space. They expect the outbreak to last for another two to six months.

Officials recommend contacting your pediatrician immediately if you suspect your child may have chicken pox.
