Calif reports 55 swine flu deaths, 23 in last week

The total of people who have died of swine flu in California is up to 55, an increase of 23 over the past week, state health officials said Thursday as they warned of more serious cases on the way.

"We expect to continue to see more cases of swine flu, more serious cases and, unfortunately, more deaths," said Ken August, spokesman for the California Department of Public Health.

Though health officials expected the spread of swine flu to slow in the hot summer months, as influenza viruses often do, the virus hasn't gone away, August said.

"While the majority of cases have been mild so far, public health officials remain very concerned that the virus could evolve into a more serious strain of influenza," he said.

In San Diego County, health officials said Thursday that two more people with underlying health problems died of swine flu. The latest victims there were a 57-year-old man who died on Monday and a 25-year-old man who died Wednesday.

No other details were released. The latest deaths bring the county's death toll to 9.

Swine flu symptoms are like a typical flu, which causes infected people to experience fever, cough, sore throat, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue.

I wonder if any of the deaths reported include prisoners or detainees. There was a huge outbreak in at least one of the prisons - San Quentin - as well as in some immigration detention centers. I suppose there is really no way to find out. I just hope the care received by the patients from these places was up to par.

Although the California website is not giving detail on the recent deaths like age, gender, underlying confdition, date of death, the countrty is given in the table that lists cases, hospitalizations and deaths.

HOUSTON, July 16 (Xinhua) -- The A/H1N1 flu death toll in the most populous U.S. State of California has reached 55, while confirmed and probable cases rose to 3,168, according to the latest statistics released by the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) late Thursday.
The department said that 24 more deaths have been reported in the past week, a 77-percent jump from the previous record of 31, and 707 new cases have emerged, representing a 29-percent increase from the previous total of 2,461 released a week ago by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Since the outbreak of the A/H1N1 flu, California has been among the top states leading the nation with most deaths and confirmed cases of the new flu virus. The latest CDPH report shows that San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and Long Beach counties have been the four hardest-hit, with San Diego and Orange each has 8 deaths, while Los Angeles and Long Beach each has 7 victims of the new A/H1N1 virus.
However, the department said the reported number of cases of A/H1N1 flu in California do not reflect how many actual cases there may be in the state because individuals in outpatient settings are no longer being tested for the presence of the virus and many cases go undetected due to the mild nature of the disease among most people.
Laboratory testing is limited to individuals with serious A/H1N1 illness, including hospitalized patients, and those at high risk for complications, the department explained. Dr. Anne Schuchat, a leading CDC expert, said two weeks ago that she and other CDC experts believe there might be more than one million Americans who have been infected with the A/H1N1 virus, though many probably had only a mild illness. Both state and federal health officials urge people to be prepared for the global pandemic declared by World Health Organization last month.

Based on the date introduction and the geographic origins of the beginning of the first H1N1 reports, is this signalling the begining of Wave 2? With the high traffic between California/Mexico and Arizona/Mexico it would seem these would be the most likely places to watch.

It would be helpful to have dates of death, but they don't seem to be providing it. For my own tracking purposes I am assuming these are recent deaths and not deaths for which tests have been pending for several weeks.

I live here in LA, actually long beach, and so far there is not a single local newspaper reporting the Ca outbreak, except in some buried items in the health sections.
I scan the LA Times regularly and there is almost zero coverage , except again in the buried heath section , but the reporting of actual daily stats and news on recent cases is non existent.

LA so far has 8-9 total deaths from the flu but it is a city of 4 miillion, county has 10 million so the deaths have to be put in perspective. We have 10-20 gang-related homicides in LA county each week and about as many deaths from auto accidents.
I am Not making light of this as i have read all the reports on FT , read J Barry's book, and am aware of the gravity of this pandemic. LA region will likely be hit hard around Oct with the second for sure more deadlier wave as that is the usual time the seasonal flu starts up.
If there is a second wave outbreak here already it is being covered up by the local MSM outlets here in LA, by the LA dept of heath, and state DPH. So far there is not general awareness among the local media outlets and the general poplulation of this SW Flu pndemic: restaurants, malls, beachs, movie theaters are still doing close to normal traffic ,though with the bad recession business is naturally down.


So far here in LA la la land the only news you get is Michael Jackson and other fluff news, and nothing on the Flu.

This is the LA times own swine flu site . LA times last reported item on this was June 19th ,almost a month ago. LA Times and local MSM must have at least 100-200 sw flu deaths in the city before they wake up. Even then they will minimize coverage as the city already reels from a 15-20 % UE, and a 500 million budget gap, and they cannot allow the SW flu news to disrupt the city's already prostrate economy. BTW:LA may be the moist corrupt, graft- ridden city in America(ok maybe Chicago takes top spot). The city will respond as Philadelphia did in in 1918, with crys of "every is normal ,don't worry", even as deaths from this pandemic pile up in the ER's and ICU's.

I have come up with a simple method for combating this Pandemic. A half and half mix of Red wine and 100% cranberry juice. Simple and very tasty, and i even take it with me whenever i go out, using discarded gatorade bottles. If this is too expensive for that Sw Flu stockpile budget U may want to dilute mixture with water. Say half water and 1/4 each of red wine and 100% cranberry juice, or a 1/3 mix of each. Cranberry juice is admittedly a high cost item for the sw flu pandemic stockpile list, if you cannot grow it in a garden. I am sure Shannon will post a cheaper do-it-yourself way of making the cranberry juice, similar to that excellent recipe for home-made Sambucol, which i will start on soon.

I will be stockpiling gallons of red wine at least, and a ton of Pasta.

SANTA ANA The Men's Central Jail is on lockdown after five inmates were diagnosed with swine flu.
Visitors are not being allowed to see any of the jail's inmates over the weekend, authorities said, to cut down on the possibility of spreading of the potentially deadly virus.
The Inmate Reception Center, where suspects are held while they are booked and processed, is operating normally and is accepting visitors.

The first of the inmates were diagnosed by the Orange County Health Care Agency around 6 a.m. Thursday, said Sheriff's Department spokesman John McDonald. Two more were diagnosed later that day.
Two more were diagnosed Friday, and the decision to lock down the jail was made late Friday, McDonald said.

While under lock down, the jail's 1,242 inmates are not allowed to leave their cells, McDonald said. Inmates will also be closely looked at for symptoms of the potentially deadly virus.

Eleven Orange County residents have died of swine flu, the most of any county in California, according to the state Department of Public Health.
The county's Health Care Agency on June 8 reported the first H1N1 influenza death of a middle-age man with pre-existing health conditions.
