An official for six Calgary daycare centres closed due to an E. coli outbreak says a deep cleaning of the facilities could take up to a week.

Alberta Health Services said Tuesday there were 56 lab-confirmed cases linked to the outbreak including up to 50 children arriving at hospitals.

AHS said the number of people hospitalized has increased to 15, up from the 12 it had reported on Monday. ...

More cases continue to be linked to the Calgary daycare E. coli outbreak.

And while some parents are having to watch as their kids are being hospitalized, other parents are taking action to seek restitution.

On Friday, Alberta Health Services said there were 142 lab-confirmed cases linked to the outbreak and 26 kids were stable in hospital – one at the Peter Lougheed Centre and the rest at the Alberta Children’s Hospital – and five patients had been discharged from hospital. On Thursday, the outbreak included 128 lab-confirmed cases and hospitals had 25 patients.

Calgary Zone medical officer of health Dr. Franco Rizzuti said 11 of those hospitalized patients have more serious illness than the bloody diarrhea that is part of a Shiga toxin-producing E. coli infection, which includes hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and other complications.

“We continue to work to find the source of this outbreak, but have not yet pinpointed it,” Rizzuti said, noting the rate of cases is consistent with the working theory that a central kitchen is the source of the outbreak....

Some patients on dialysis from E. coli outbreak as families launch class-action suit against daycare operators

Published Sep 08, 2023

A few of a growing number of patients from a daycare E. coli outbreak are receiving dialysis treatments, Alberta Health Services said Friday.

That news came hours after a class-action lawsuit was filed against the operators of several daycares that were served by a single kitchen being investigated as the possible source for the infections, which on Friday numbered 142. ...

Rizzuti (Dr. Franco Rizzuti, AHS medical officer of health for the Calgary zone.) said the source of the illnesses still hasn’t been determined, though an investigation continues.

Meanwhile, a class-action lawsuit was filed Friday at Court of King’s Bench, naming all of the daycares involved in the episode. ...

An inspection of the kitchen was conducted by Alberta Health Services on 5 September, one day after officials declared an E. coli outbreak.

The health inspectors' report noted several critical violations, including a pest infection and issues with how food was being handled and transported.

"Two live adult cockroaches were observed on the sides of stainless steel equipment around the dishwashing area," the report says.

It adds that traps set up near two sinks "had at least 20 cockroaches on the sticky pads each" and that a "sewer gas smell" was detected in the kitchen.

Food was also being transported without proper cold storage and sanitising liquid was being improperly mixed, resulting in an ineffective disinfectant solution.

"Food was not being handled in a manner that makes it safe to eat," health inspectors wrote in the report...

Patient count exceeds 225 in E. coli outbreak linked to daycare centers

By Coral Beach on September 11, 2023

The patient count in an E. coli outbreak linked to daycare centers in Calgary, Canada, now stands at 231.
Alberta Health Services officials say 26 of the sick are currently hospitalized, 25 of them children and one adult. Eleven other children have already been discharged from hospitals. Twenty-one children have hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) which is a type of kidney failure that also affects other organs.
A specific food has not been identified as the source of the E. coli O157:H7, but investigators have collected samples of leftovers and frozen food for testing. Eleven daycare centers that share a common kitchen were closed...

Update on E. coli outbreak in Calgary

A detailed investigation is currently underway to determine the source of the contamination, which is believed to be a food source from the central kitchen used by the daycares. On this page:
Since the E. coli outbreak was declared on Sept. 4, health care staff have been working to identify and care for those affected and identify the source. The results of the investigation will inform additional steps that may be needed to ensure this type of situation does not occur again.

“I am extremely concerned by this ongoing outbreak, and my heart goes out to everyone whose lives have been turned upside down by this event. I know that health care workers are doing everything they can to help those who are ill. Minister Turton and I are working together with AHS to make sure everyone involved is protected and cared for and we get to the bottom of what happened.”
-
Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Health

“It's heartbreaking to see the lives of children and their families turned upside down by this outbreak. Right now we are focusing on the issue at hand: the safety and well-being of the children affected. We all want to know more about how this happened and what can be done to ensure we prevent this from happening again.”
-
Searle Turton, Minister of Children and Family Services

Hospitalizations and cases

As of Sept. 12, there were 264 lab-confirmed cases of E. coli connected to this outbreak. There are currently 25 patients receiving care in hospital. Twenty-two patients have been confirmed as having hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), which is a severe illness caused by E. coli infection. Six patients are receiving peritoneal dialysis at Alberta Children’s Hospital. Children with severe illness are in stable conditions and are receiving the care they need in hospital. Other children and families are receiving care and support at three outpatient clinics set up in Calgary hospitals.

Alberta’s government started notifying parents of the outbreak by letter on Sept. 3. AHS has updated parents and the public since declaring the outbreak through news releases and media availabilities to provide regular updates.

Daycares

Eleven child-care facilities were closed as part of the outbreak investigation. Facilities with links to a central kitchen were closed out of an abundance of caution. AHS has since rescinded the closure orders for four facilities – Little Oak Early Education, Almond Branch, Braineer Academy and Fueling Brains Bridgeland – as no one from the sites has tested positive, and public health inspectors have ensured that the sites have taken appropriate measures such as cleaning and disinfection.

Decisions on site reopening after the closure orders are rescinded will be made by the operator. It is anticipated some or all of the other seven facilities will have their closure orders rescinded on Sept. 12, once health officials confirm it is safe to do so. Young children and staff will require clearance from health officials for the safety of all at the child-care facility. This will include testing negative for E. coli.

Central kitchen inspections

The central kitchen used by the daycares was inspected five times this year, with the latest inspection taking place on Sept. 5 following the proactive closure of the kitchen due to the outbreak. Prior to this closure, the facility was last inspected in April. Two infractions were found at that time and corrected immediately through collaboration between AHS and the operator. As of the end of April 2023, no violations existed in this kitchen.

However, three critical violations were identified during the inspection on Sept. 5 relating to food handling, sanitization and pest control. Two non-critical violations were also identified related to an odour and storage of utensils. The report is available on the AHS Environmental Public Health website.

The kitchen will not be allowed to reopen until all issues related to the infractions have been properly addressed and signed off by public health officials and the investigation into the E. Coli outbreak has been completed.

Guidance to parents

If children develop symptoms, including bloody diarrhea, families are strongly encouraged to visit an emergency department. If a child is not symptomatic, please do not take them to hospital. Families with concerns or questions can call Health Link at 8-1-1 or get in touch with their family physician for advice and support.

Meatloaf likely source of Calgary daycare E. coli outbreak as shared kitchen charged
CMOH said there are ‘extremely high odds’ outbreak caused by meatloaf served at daycares
Jade Markus · CBC News · Posted: Sep 27, 2023 10:21 AM EDT | Last Updated: 3 hours ago

The City of Calgary said Wednesday it has laid charges against a shared kitchen — used by several daycares experiencing an E. coli outbreak — for operating without the proper licence.

Minutes after that announcement, Alberta's chief medical officer of health said investigators have narrowed down the cause of the outbreak to one likely source.

This comes after an outbreak of shiga toxin-producing E. coli, which has resulted in 351 lab-confirmed cases and 37 secondary cases, Alberta's Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Mark Joffe said...
