C. difficile outbreak reported at Headwaters hospital

Headwaters Health Care Centre has announced they are dealing with an outbreak of Clostridium difficile (C. difficile). The hospital released a press release today (Jan 4.) informing the public the hospital has reported six patients diagnosed with C. difficile which constitutes an outbreak under the Ontario Public Health Standards guidelines.
?C. difficile is more prevalent in the winter months. We are seeing a larger number of C. difficile patients being admitted with this infection. Public health has lifted a C. difficile outbreak at Headwaters Health Care Centre, after previous test results were proven faulty.
The outbreak was declared on Jan. 4, following six reported cases of hospital-acquired illness.
?Based on testing done at the public health laboratory and an outside hospital laboratory, it appears three of the six specimens from December had tested falsely positive,? Anne Augustin, Headwaters? infection prevention and control co-ordinator, said in a news release. ?Headwaters laboratory will be following up with the manufacturer of the testing kit and Health Canada.?
