Outbreaks of the deadly and highly virulent avian flu virus have been detected at two Sonoma County poultry operations near Petaluma, forcing the euthanasia of nearly a quarter of a million ducks and laying hens.

The economic loss at the Sunrise Farms chicken operation alone could be more than $3 million, according to fourth-generation farmer and Sunrise co-owner Michael Weber, who told The Press Democrat that poultry ranchers across the county are “nervous about what this means.”...

Fifteen wild birds in Sonoma County tested positive for the virus in July 2022, as well, most recently in June, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

It also has been detected this year in wild birds in Yolo, Solano, Sacramento, Monterey and San Diego counties and has appeared in 47 states since last year, including 26 in the past 30 days, USDA says...

SAN BENITO, Calif. —

The Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza A (H5N1) was detected in a San Benito County poultry flock.

According to the San Benito Health and Human Services Agency, 5,000 birds had to be culled after the disease was discovered. The birds belonged to a commercial duck breeder.

The threat to the public is low, health leaders noted, but said that the public is aware of the potential risk of handling or coming into close contact with a diseased or dead bird...

Another Sonoma County poultry farm has tested positive for a highly contagious and deadly strain of avian flu despite strict quarantine protocols and ceaseless work among local producers of late to protect vulnerable commercial flocks.

Liberty Ducks, a boutique producer whose Pekin ducks are on the menus of many of the Bay Area's finest restaurants, escaped the initial outbreak in late November, but last week had a positive test for fast-spreading bird influenza at one of their smaller farms, according to Jennifer Reichardt, chief operating officer of Liberty Ducks.

At least 4,000 birds were affected, roughly a third of the Liberty Farms total production according to Reichardt. The outbreak was confined to a single farm, though Reichardt declined to give a specific location.

A U.S. Department of Agriculture website dedicated to tracking positive tests at poultry facilities showed a positive Dec. 7 test affecting an unidentified Sonoma County location with 4,900 ducks...

The California Department of Food and Agriculture confirmed last week that a pair of commercial farms in Stanislaus County experienced highly pathogenic avian influenza outbreaks. The fast-spreading virus — also known as avian flu or bird flu — has forced the two farms to quarantine and euthanize their birds to prevent further spread of the disease.

The names of the two farms were not released, although the CDFA shared that they each raise an estimated 250,000 chickens.

The outbreaks in Stanislaus County came just four days after an outbreak was reported in Sonoma County and a week after the disease was detected in Fresno County...

Sonoma County has recorded its largest incidence of avian flu to date, with producers now forced to euthanize more than 500,000 birds at three local poultry facilities this week.

That brings the tally to seven sites and more than a million birds since the week of Thanksgiving, a widening trend that has sent a wave of dread through a $50 million county industry.

“Everybody’s kind of sitting with bated breath,” said Dayna Ghirardelli, executive director of the Sonoma County Farm Bureau. “They trying do all they can to protect their flocks, and crossing their fingers they can avoid an outbreak. No one feels immune to it. Everyone is on high alert.”...

Sonoma County’s beleaguered poultry industry took more hits during Christmas week, as two additional producers recorded outbreaks of avian flu.

A pair of commercial egg farms joined the growing list of affected county sites on Dec. 28, according to U.S. Department of Agriculture data. The two farms were ordered to euthanize a total of 91,300 birds. It was not immediately clear which companies were affected.

That same day, the highly contagious bird flu struck a commercial egg producer in Marin County. That one, the first recorded in Marin, will result in the deaths of 151,000 chickens.

Sonoma County’s grim tally now stands at more than 1.15 million euthanized birds since Thanksgiving week, spread among nine farms. Those that have been identified are clustered in the county’s poultry belt, in the pastureland west of Petaluma...
