Los Angeles County sees spike in two canine illnesses

A pair of diseases for dogs have pet owners and public health officials worried in Los Angeles County.

Dr. Karen Ehnert, director of Veterinary Public Health for the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, noted that the recent rise of cases of canine influenza and leptospirosis “is not normal.”

“I have been with county for 21 years,” she said. “This is the first time we’ve had such large outbreaks.”

The outbreaks, which Ehnert said started in mid-July, were introduced to the county by dogs that came from other places...

...“This outbreak is driven by dog-to-dog transmission of the bacteria in group settings such as boarding kennels or dog daycare, leading to a higher number of cases than what has been seen in recent years,” the department said on its website.

The department also noted that canine flu — or CIV H3N2 — is spreading at these facilities.

“To date, this is the largest outbreak of CIV H3N2 reported in Los Angeles County,” the department said on its website...

LA County dog flu outbreak concerning Central Coast dog owners

A large outbreak of canine influenza in Los Angeles County is causing concern for pet owners in San Luis Obispo County, with cases starting to show up locally.

The dog flu, or canine influenza, is an infectious respiratory disease caused by an Influenza virus, similar to viral strains that cause influenza in people.

Pismo Beach Veterinary Clinic is often busy with owners seeking care for their pets, but lately, Dr. Joel Conn said even more people have been calling the office with concerns about the dog flu.

“We haven’t had a major outbreak in this area since about 2016, 2017-ish," Conn said. "But there has been a fairly large outbreak in LA County, and so we are seeing some of that start to hit SLO County.”

L.A. County Department of Public Health said so far there are 800 confirmed cases and seven deaths from the dog flu.

In SLO County, there have been five confirmed cases but no deaths reported...

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Canine influenza, also known as the dog flu, is spreading fast in Southern California and experts warn holiday reunions and boarding may lead to an even bigger increase in virus infection.

Almost all dogs are susceptible to canine flu infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and virus infection tends to spread among dogs housed in kennels and shelters, which isn't good as many pet owners kick off the holidays...

Canine influenza H3N2 outbreak in Los Angeles County update

In a follow-up on the canine influenza outbreak in Los Angeles County, Veterinary Public Health now reports 1284 confirmed and probable cases of canine influenza virus (CIV) H3N2 in dogs in LA County from July to December 20, 2021.

The death toll has risen to 13 dogs linked to this outbreak.

Of the cases reported, most were associated with attending boarding kennels or dog daycare settings...
