Burkina Faso/Poni: 3 people from the same family lose their lives following suspected food poisoning

Lucien KAMBOU September 21, 2023

The tragedy occurred in Kpélé, a village in the rural commune of Malba, in the province of Poni. A mother and two of her children lost their lives in circumstances that have not yet been clarified. The mother died on September 16, 2023 and the children, who had been hospitalized, died the next day.

Another of the woman's children is currently hospitalized. A fifth person from the same family, a student at the University of Gaoua, is also in care.

Among the dead, a teenager who obtained her Primary Education Certificate (CEP) this year. “She gave the tailor some fabric for her school outfit in preparation for the next school year. A garment that she will never wear,” testifies a relative of the victim, in distress.

If the real causes of the tragedy are still unknown, two hypotheses are circulating in the village. The first is that of intoxication. The tragedy occurred while the family was celebrating the funeral of one of their own, a senior citizen.

During the funeral, an attempt was made to wake up a lady who had dozed off in vain. The lady's two daughters were also suffering and unable to express themselves.

The lady eventually died. The next day, the two girls also lost their lives while they were hospitalized at Gaoua hospital.

A student from the University of Gaoua, from the same family, is still hospitalized, “in serious condition,” confides a witness.

In October 2020, nine people from another family lost their lives in the same village, in similar circumstances.

The Gaoua public prosecutor's office then announced the opening of an investigation. One person had been arrested, but to date, the trial has not taken place, explains a resident of the village. The results of the investigation have also not been made public and the real causes of these deaths are still unknown.

In March 2021, in the same province, eight people from the same family (different from the previous two) lost their lives after a family meal. It was precisely in the village of Danhal Kpangara, commune of Gaoua.

The second hypothesis on the death of the three people in Kpélé is mythical but seems more plausible in the eyes of the victims' family and several other people in the village.

The late Yerbour Kambou was fiercely opposed to her husband's second marriage. And for good reason, the lady that the husband planned to marry is his own cousin.

Yerbour, who says he cannot bear living with his cousin for the same man, has however not left the marital home.

She made a statement which, according to sources within the village of Kpélé, was at the origin of the tragedy.

“The day I die, I will leave with my children,” she reportedly announced. For the moment, the real causes of these deaths are unknown. The lady “bequeathed” (the cousin) as well as the last child (around 4 years old) of the deceased are unwell.

A member of the family of the deceased, contacted by telephone by 24heure.bf, confides that health workers went to the family of the missing to better understand the health situation. But no information has been communicated to them yet.

The Major of the Malba dispensary, Loukoumane Sawadogo, claims to have received a total of five people for consultations. Among them, the three people who died.

During a session of the Municipal Council on September 21, the first head of Malba's health services informed the municipal authorities that it was food poisoning. And that a report had been sent to his superiors.

However, at the microphone of 24heure.bf, the latter prefers not to comment on the subject, affirming that he prefers to wait for the return of his hierarchy.

Kpélé drama: the hospitalized student is no longer, 4 deaths in total

Lucien KAMBOU September 23, 2023

Thursday September 21, 2023, 24heure.bf, in an article titled “ Burkina Faso/Poni: 3 people from the same family lose their lives following alleged food poisoning ”, informed public opinion of a tragedy which created disarray in a family in Kpélé, rural commune of Malba, in the province of Poni. A lady and her two daughters had lost their lives in a “mysterious” way, while the son of the same lady, a 2nd year student in Cultural and Tourist Heritage Management (GPCT), was hospitalized. The latest news is that the student from the Polytechnic University Center of Gaoua died on the night of Friday to Saturday September 23.

A mother and three of her children lost their lives in circumstances that have not yet been clarified. The mother died on September 18, 2023 and the two daughters died the next day. One of the lady's boys who was hospitalized did not survive.

“He (Sansan De Kossi Da) told me this September 19 at the Malba health center that their remedial session at the university was during the week and that he had to go there for a few modules. Unfortunately, he will never take part in this examination,” confides a relative devastated by the sadness of losing a loved one.

“Yesterday, September 18, 2023, my mother lost her life at the Gaoua Regional Hospital Center. Today, September 19, the little sister who has just passed her exam successfully has just lost her life,” announced via his Facebook page the student who will also lose his life three days later in similar circumstances. Before being unable to speak, a witness told us, he had said he had pain in his hip.

Another witness explains that the manifestations differed from one person to another, rejecting the hypothesis of food poisoning.

He cites the case of one of the girls who died: “she was leading goats to pasture and suddenly she started trembling and her body was heating; she was brought into the room; she is dead,” he explains.

For him, given that the family is large and everyone, including the husband, shared the same meal, "why is it only the lady and her children who will have problems after the meal?" », he asks before adding that on Saturday September 23, one of the daughters of the deceased who came from Ghana, had a seizure when she crossed the border into Burkina (7 km from the village ). She was taken back to the nearest Ghanaian town for treatment.

Another daughter of the lady who came from Ivory Coast for the same circumstances saw the bus she took fall and break down; she also suffers from an inexplicable illness, we learn from consistent sources.

The two have so far been unable to return to the family home.

Reached by telephone by 24heure.bf, the Major of the Malba health center, Loukoumane Sawadogo, explains that the patients he received did not have homogeneous signs.

The student was initially diagnosed with malaria. After treatment, his condition was stable and he was released. Three days later, he was urgently brought to the health service in a comatose state, explains the health worker who said he noted signs on some of the patients such as digestive disorders, including vomiting, stomach aches, diarrhea.

The lady having arrived in a comatose state, the nurse was unable to note the symptomatic aspects. In addition to the student, one of the girls was diagnosed with malaria.

“We cannot completely trust the hypothesis of food poisoning because the victims are not in the same place. For questions of a mystical nature relating to African religion, as technicians, we cannot get involved,” says Mr. Sawadogo who says he does not understand the real causes of the situation for the moment. He has sent a report to the hierarchy and is awaiting instructions.
