The Burkinabè Ministry in charge of Health has declared a cholera epidemic after the confirmation of a case of contamination at the Medical Center (CM) of Kantchari, province of Tapoa, in the Eastern region of Burkina Faso.
The Minister in charge of Health, Robert Lucien Jean-Claude Kargougou, explained in a press release that a 25-year-old male patient presented on July 1 with symptoms of "profuse watery stools (...), uncontrollable vomiting, dehydration", which began the same day at the Boudiéri market in the town of Kantchari.
The results of the samples confirmed on July 3, the presence of "Vibio cholerae of serogroup 01 and serotype Ogawa confirming the diagnosis of Cholera and at the same time triggering an epidemic", underlined the press release.
The patent is taken care of in accordance with the protocol in force and the contacts identified, followed up and taken care of free of charge.
In addition, disinfection measures are already underway in the town, added the press release, specifying that a second suspected case was notified in the same locality on July 05 with a "very rapid amendment of the symptomatology" .
Guidelines for epidemiological surveillance, prevention and case management have been given to all regional directors of health and public hygiene.
