Burkina: 89 confirmed cases of CHIKUNGUNYA in Pouytenga

The Health Emergency Response Operations Center (CORUS) informs that 89 cases of CHIKUNGUNYA have been confirmed in Pouytenga in the Center-East region of Burkina Faso by the national viral hemorrhagic fever reference laboratory (LNR/FHV) at the MURAZ center .
“On September 6, 2023, the viral hemorrhagic fever reference laboratory confirmed a case of Chikungunya in a patient from the Pouytenga health district whose sample was taken as part of sentinel surveillance for dengue and other arboviruses. The patient is 30 years old and lives in sector 2 of Pouytenga in the Center East region. The patient has not traveled in the last 14 days. The start date of the signs would be August 19, 2023. She presented with an acute fever with a temperature of 39°C, headache and joint pain.
The malaria RDT result was positive. The thick film was negative. The patient was hospitalized and put on treatment. The LNR-FHV received and tested positive for the Chikungunya virus case by RT-PCR,” indicates the CORUS note.

The Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Dr Robert Kargogou, made an oral communication to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday October 4, 2023 relating to the epidemiological situation of chikungunya in Burkina Faso in September 2023.

In Burkina Faso, a first case of chikungunya disease was confirmed on September 6, 2023 by the National Reference Laboratory for viral hemorrhagic fever (LNR-FHV) in a patient in the Pouytenga health district.
Following this detection, 89 other cases of chikungunya were also confirmed in the same locality and two new cases found in Ouagadougou.
“ To date no cases of death linked to this virus have been recorded. The main components of the response against chikungunya are the fight against larvae and the adequate management of cases ,” indicated the Minister in charge of Health, Dr Robert Lucien Kargougou, to the council of ministers.
Furthermore, the response against this disease will be done by capitalizing on several ongoing actions as part of responses to the outbreak of dengue cases in the Hauts-Bassins and Center regions.
