School's attendance affected by whooping cough

SHEPHERDSVILLE, Ky. --
The principal of a central Kentucky school says he hopes an outbreak of whooping cough will soon go away.
Marlin Gregg says no new cases were suspected early Friday at Freedom Elementary School, but Family Resource Center spokeswoman Sheri Bishop says 2 students with symptoms were sent home later in the school day.
Bishop said there were 107 students absent Friday, but it was not known how many were suffering from whooping cough. The Courier-Journal reported that 70 students were absent Thursday and another 20 sent home with symptoms of the disease.
Since the beginning of the month, 10 students have tested positive for the disease, which is also known as peretussis.
Freedom Elementary is a public school in Bullitt County with just over 600 students.
