SOFIA (Reuters) - Bulgaria?s food safety agency authorities reported on Sunday an outbreak of the bird flu virus on a duck farm in the northeastern village of Stefanovo and said birds on the farm were being culled.
It is the second outbreak of bird flu at the facility since October, when more than 10,000 ducks were culled.
It was unclear which strain of bird flu it was. Bulgaria has reported a handful of outbreaks of bird flu since December, some of them involving the highly pathogenic H5N8 bird flu virus.
At the farm in Stefanovo, a three-kilometer protection zone had been set around the farm and the movement of domestic, wild and other birds and has been banned within it, as has the sale of eggs and poultry, the food safety agency said on its website.

Dobrich. All Pekin ducks at the poultry farm in the village of Stefanovo, where an outbreak of bird flu was found, were slaughtered, Dobrich Regional Governor and Chairman of the Regional Epizootic Commission Krasimir Kirilov said at a press briefing today, Focus Radio reported.
Some 21,406 birds and 36,000 hatchlings were humanely culled. The farm?s veterinarian took samples that were sent to Germany. Last Friday, a sample was taken and sent to Sofia for urgent diagnostics. The strain has not been confirmed yet but it is assumed to be H5N8...

Bulgaria Agriculture Minister: Million eggs to be withdrawn from market because of bird flu

More than a million eggs are to be withdrawn from the Bulgarian market because of outbreaks of bird flu in the country, Agriculture Minister Roumen Porozhanov said in a June 22 television interview.

The step was necessary in order to halt the spread of the disease, he said, adding that it was not dangerous to human health.

Bird flu was a problem for Bulgarian poultry breeders for a second consecutive year, Porozhanov told public broadcaster Bulgarian National Television.

Authorities expected that there would be further outbreaks, so serious steps had to be taken against the infection, he said.
