Doctors in Bulgaria have proven the first case of West Nile virus encephalitis (WNE) infection transmitted locally.The infection was found in a 7-year-old kid bitten by a mosquito in a Sofia Park, the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases reports.

Child sick from WNV

A 12-year-old child survived a serious illness from WNV, announced the Regional Health Directorate in Varna.

Kid of Avren with. Trastenik. Populous his family, which has a total of 5 children lived near marshland full of mosquitoes. It brings back rare acute viral infection after contact with infected birds.

The first symptoms are fever, headache, muscle and joint pain.

Fever is treatable, but delay in therapy, there is a risk of serious damage to the nervous system. In case the child has developed encephalitis and nearly a month being treated at University Hospital "St. Mary."

Already been written, but there may be residual movement disorders, said Acting Director of RHI Dr. Dochka Mihailova. According to her, this is the first case of West Nile virus in Varna. After serological samples confirmed the diagnosis, the health authorities approached vets in the region. So far, no evidence of sick animals healthy and have other members of the family of child morbidity, said Dr. Mihailova.
