An outbreak of bird flu has been established in a poultry farm in the Plovdiv village of Trilistnik, according to the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency.

According to the agency for this site, this is the second outbreak for this year and the fifth from 2017 until today.

At the time of the outbreak, more than 30,000 birds were kept on the poultry farm, and the suspicion of the disease among them was caused by increased mortality.

In Europe this year, the High Pathogenic Influenza (H5) virus was confirmed in 1,790 wild birds and 1,219 outbreaks in poultry farms. Highly pathogenic H5N8 and H5N1 strains are currently circulating.

Since the beginning of the year, 9 outbreaks have been confirmed in Bulgaria (including the new one in the village of Trilistnik) and two cases of wild birds.

The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has confirmed a new outbreak of highly pathogenic avian influenza in Plovdiv. The disease was found on a farm with partridges and partridges in the village of Stryama, Rakovski municipality, Plovdiv district. The site falls within a 3-km protection zone of the outbreak, announced on 16.11.2021.

After a high mortality in birds in the last few days, the farm immediately informed RFSD-Plovdiv. Samples were tested confirmed to be positive for highly pathogenic avian influenza H5N1 from the NRL for avian influenza and Newcastle disease, NDNIVMI.

Measures have been ordered for the humane killing of birds in the affected aviary, disposal of carcasses and contaminated materials, cleaning and disinfection. The number of available partridges and partridges is about 500.

All measures for disease control in the established protection and surveillance zones, ordered by the order of the Executive Director of the BFSA to declare the outbreak of 16 November, remain in force. It is prohibited to move and transport birds to and from the affected site, including for the purposes of resettlement of birds for renewal of game stock for a period until the lifting of the bans on the established protection and surveillance zone.

The BFSA reminds that the autumn-winter season is high risk for the disease and appeals to the owners to keep their birds indoors. In the event of any deviation from the health status of the birds, farmers should immediately inform a veterinarian.
