Epidemic measles outbreak in northeastern Bulgarian village
26 May 2009 | 12:21 | FOCUS News Agency
Silistra. 17 people diagnosed with measles have been admitted in the infectious ward of the hospital in the northeastern town of Silistra between May 3rd and 24th, Dr. Teodora Nacheva, director of the Supervision of Infectious Diseases unit in the Regional Inspectorate for Public Health Preservation and Control in the municipality of Silistra, told Focus Radio ? Shumen.
The epidemic focus is in the northeastern village of Poroyno, municipality of Dulovo. 10 people from the village have been admitted to the hospital. At the weekend seven more children from the village were admitted. A small family focus has been formed in the town of Dulovo as three children from one family are infected with measles. All infected people are of Roma origin. Most of the children do not have a GP and no one followed their immunization status. Roma communities are very mobile, with great migration, low hygienic and health culture, which helps the development of the disease among their community, the doctor said.
