Bulgaria has reported outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza at three farms in the south of the country, the World Organization for Animal Health announced on Monday, as Europe faces a seasonal increase in the number of cases of deadly avian influenza.
The H5N1 virus was detected at three farms with a total of 28,000 birds in the town of Rakovski, the Paris-based organization said, citing a report by Bulgarian authorities.
At least two of the farms are duck farms, according to the report.
The spread of bird flu has raised concerns among governments and the poultry industry after devastating poultry flocks around the world in recent years, disrupting supplies, fuelling rising prices and increasing the risk of transmission to humans.
