Bird flu discovered in Bulgaria’s Burgas region: deputy minister

Sofia. "Dead birds were established on the territory of [coastal] Burgas 4 days ago," said Tsvetan Dimitrov, Bulgarian Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, speaking at an extraordinary press conference, FOCUS News Agency reported.

In his words, 2 dead birds were found – a pelican and a seagull. The pelican had bird flu, tests proved.

Dimitrov assured there was nothing concerning in the situation and all needed measures had been taken
 
[h=1]Bulgaria reports single case of bird flu: official[/h] SOFIA, Jan. 27 (Xinhua) -- Bulgaria has registered a single case of H5N1 bird flu near the Black Sea city of Burgas, said Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, Tsvetan Dimitrov here on Tuesday.
The virus was detected in a Dalmatian Pelican, Dimitrov said at a press conference.
"There is nothing alarming at this stage because we have taken all necessary precautions," Dimitrov said.
Bulgaria, located along main bird migratory routes from Northern Europe to Africa, registered the first case of H5N1 in 2005.

The samples will be tested for confirmation by inoculation of chicken embryos. The pelican was found dead together with a black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus) in the framework of the passive surveillance under the national avian influenza surveillance and control program approved by European Commission. Emergency measures introduced in relation to prevent bird flu outbreak in Bulgaria

Sofia. Extraordinary security measures were introduced by the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety in connection with established and announced a primary outbreak of "bird flu" (H5N1) in the village of Konstantinovo, Burgas Municiplaity. Measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus among poultry, the press office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food announced.

Three (3) kilometers protection zone around the outbreak and ten (10) kilometers surveillance zone have been introduced. The protection zone covers the village of Konstantinov and monitored area including the following settlements: Burgas Municipality ? Burgas city, Meden Rudnik and Gorno Ezerovo living districts, as well as villages of Varli Bryag and Dimchevo; Municipality of Kameno ? villages of Cherni Vrah, Polski Izvor and Livada; Municipality of Sredets - Drachevo and Debelt and Sozopol Municipality ? Prisad village.
 
More than 2,000 birds killed in Bulgaria?s Konstantinovo over bird flu

Burgas. Some 2,121 birds form 105 households have been killed in the Bulgarian village of Konstantinovo, municipality of Kameno, district of Burgas, over bird flu. Director of the district directorate of the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency in Burgas, Dr Georgi Mitev, announced the information for Radio FOCUS.

He added that there would be a meeting of the local crisis headquarters to outline the next measures needed to be taken to restrict the spreading of the virus, such as establishing an extra buffer zone of 10 km.

?What needed to be done as adequate measures has been done. Unfortunately, we killed the birds in the village,? Mr Mitev remarked, adding that there were no new cases of bird flu in the region.
