The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has identified an outbreak of influenza A (flu) in a poultry farm in the village of Susam, Mineralni Bani municipality, Haskovo region. The outbreak was detected as a result of a report by the owner of the farm about increased mortality in the birds kept there. The farm keeps about 700 peacocks.

A 3-kilometer protection zone has been defined around the affected livestock facility, which includes the villages of Susam and Mineralni bani, Mineralni bani municipality, Haskovo region. The 10-kilometer monitored zone includes: Tatarevo, Sirakovo, Spahievo and Bryastovo villages from Mineralni bani municipality, Haskovo region; Bodrovo, Varbitsa, Svetlina and Gorski izvor villages from Dimitrovgrad municipality, Haskovo region; Garvanovo and Vaglarovo villages from Haskovo municipality, Haskovo region; Ezerovo, Voden and Bukovo villages from Parvomay municipality, Plovdiv region.

In order to contain the disease and prevent its spread, the necessary measures will be taken in accordance with current legislation.
An epizootic study is carried out and the movements of domestic and other birds, products and animal by-products obtained from them, bird feed, as well as the means of transport related to the technological process at the site are monitored.

Poultry farmers whose flocks are culled due to avian influenza are eligible for compensation under the statutory procedure. This will help them to quickly resume their activities, thereby minimizing the consequences and ensuring stability in the sector.

The agency reminds that poultry meat and products obtained at a facility where an outbreak of avian influenza has been identified do not pose a risk to human health.

More information about the main measures to contain the disease can be found here .

An outbreak of bird flu has been detected at a farm with around 100,000 mule ducks near the village of Voyvodovo in the Haskovo Region (Southern Bulgaria), Haskovo's Regional Food Safety Directorate Head Georgi Iliev announced at an extraordinary meeting of the Regional Epizootic Commission on Monday.

The alert about bird fatalities was received last Friday, and laboratory testing of samples at the national reference laboratory confirmed influenza strain H5N1, Iliev said. The humane culling of the birds is now underway, after which a full disinfection of the site will be carried out.

Biosecurity measures have been ordered - a three-kilometer protection zone and a ten-kilometer surveillance zone are being established. Restrictions are being introduced on the movement of domestic, wild, and other birds, hatching eggs, poultry meat, poultry products, and eggs. The organization and holding of markets, exhibitions, and other gatherings of birds are prohibited, as is the release of birds for the restocking of game populations...
