A wild boar with FMD has been killed in the region of the southeastern Bulgarian city of Burgas. A 10 km security zone has been established and all vehicles passing through the region are being disinfected. All living animal trade in the Burgas region has been stopped...

Bulgarian authorities have confirmed the spread of foot-and-mouth (FMD) in the Bourgas village of Kosti, with 37 domestic animals reportedly infected, Bulgarian television channel bTV announced on January 10 2011.

There are other cases of FMD around the village also confirmed, Yordan Voinov from the national veterinary service told bTV.

"This is most likely an infection in a very early phase, as only one cow from the entire cattle herd was found to be infected. Investigations conducted in the villages of Rezovo and Malko Turnovo proved negative," Voinov said...

The foot-and-mouth virus in Bulgaria is gaining new ground with confirmation that another village in the country contains contaminated animals, Bulgarian media reports said on January 17 2011.

Blood samples from farm animals in the village of Rezovo, Bourgas, have proven positive, the National Veterinary Service said. The slaughter of the animals will commence later on January 17.

"The outbreak of FMD in the village of Kosti was suppressed by drastic measures implemented by the authorities, and the same will be applied here in Rezovo, veterinary service director Dr Yordan Voinov told bTV.

Rezovo's 90 cows, 60 sheep, 50 goats and 50 pigs will be killed and the area subjected to a three-month quarantine. Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and Agriculture Minister Miroslav Naidenov have repeatedly said that farmers will receive 100 per cent compensation for their livestock.

Another outbreak discovered of foot and mouth disease in Bulgaria

A second outbreak of foot and mouth disease was detected Monday in south-eastern Bulgaria, the Bulgarian-Turkish border, the National Veterinary Service said.

Agriculture Ministry announced Saturday that signs of disease were observed in 90 cattle, 70 sheep and 30 pigs at Resovo, and that the authorities are preparing to kill them immediately after confirmation.

Bulgarian veterinary services were slaughtered last week, more than 500 animals - sheep, goats, cattle and pigs - after the discovery of 37 cases of FMD in the village of Kosta, near Resovo.

They are the first cases of foot and mouth disease in recent 12 years in Bulgaria, which alerted the authorities in Brussels and expected Monday arrival of European experts. The disease, highly contagious disease that affects livestock, but people would come from Turkey, according to Bulgarian authorities.

SOFIA - A third outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease was confirmed in south east Bulgaria on Monday, despite intensive efforts in recent weeks to contain it.

The national veterinary service ordered the slaughter of 149 cattle in the village of Gramatikovo, just weeks after 700 animals had to be destroyed in the nearby villages of Kosti and Rezovo.

"We have confirmed positive results for foot-and-mouth disease in blood samples taken from one cow and 13 smaller ruminant animals in the village of Gramatikovo," the national veterinary service said.

Bulgaria's recent outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease has shattered the hunting tourism in the southeastern part of the country because of the adopted restrictive measures.

In January, Bulgaria tackled outbreaks of FMD in three villages in the very Southeast as domestic animals were infected by a wild boar that crossed in from Turkey.

Earlier this week, the authorities said they eliminated the FMD threat but a number of restrictions remain in place such as no hunting in a large swath of territory...

The foot-and-mouth (FMD) outbreak in Bulgaria is still not tackled completely, as there are reports of potentially infected animals in the village of Stefan Karadjovo, near Yambol in southeastern Bulgaria, the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency announced, quoted by local media on February 15 2011.

Routine checks on 15 animals have indicated that they could be infected by FMD. The blood samples have been sent to the national diagnostics veterinary research institute and were expected to be ready by the afternoon of February 15, the reports said...

Following secondary probes from the animals in the village of Stefan Karadjovo in Yambol, authorities have determined that there are no animals infected with foot-and-mouth disease (FMD), Dnevnik daily reported on February 16 2011.

Fears that FMD was spreading in another region came on February 15, when the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) reported of "potentially infected animals in the village of Stefan Karadjovo".

Secondary probes however proved negative, but the BFSA has vowed to keep vigilant..

New Cases of FMD Registered in Bulgaria

A new outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) occurred in the village of Granichar, in the Burgas district, experts from the Bulgarian Food Safety Agency announced Thursday. Six out of seven samples have given positive results for FMD during routine checks of all 130 animals in the village. They were owned by one farmer and will be killed as soon as possible.On March 20, a day before the European Commission was expected to lift restrictions imposed on the Burgas district because of previous FMD cases, a new outbreak was found at a private farm near the village of Kirovo, close to the border with Turkey. Cases of FMD were reported in Bulgaria at the beginning of the year and were believed to have been transmitted from wild animals coming from Turkey. There have been five outbreaks of the disease, all in the Burgas district.

Thousands of farm animals in the Strandzha region are earmarked for destruction as a new outbreak of foot-and-mouth FMD in the region of Sredets was confirmed, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) reported on March 28 2011.

But the operation to cull the animals was being hampered by a protest organised by stock-breeders who gathered and blocked the road leading to Turkey, saying that they would not allow their animals to be destroyed and that they would let them roam free instead. They are also demanding that the Bulgarian Government step in to protect them...

FMD Outbreak Crawls Further in Southeast Bulgaria

A sixth village in Southeast Bulgaria has been contaminated with food-and-mouth disease in the past four weeks leading to the slaughter of hundreds more domestic animals.

The latest FMD flare was found Thursday by inspectors of Bulgaria's Food Safety Agency in the village of Dolno Yabalkovo, Sredets Municipality, which shows that the FMD is crawling east with most of the previous cases being in the Malko Tarnovo and Tsarevo municipalities...
