12 cases of encephalitis detected

A TOTAL of 12 patients with symptoms of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infection have been reported in the country, said the Ministry of Health (MoH) in a statement yesterday.

JE infection has never been previously detected or reported in the country until October this year.

Nine of the cases of JE infection were reported in Belait, two in Tutong and one in Brunei-Muara.

The statement said that three patients from Belait have been confirmed, with laboratory tests, to be infected by the JE virus.

Six patients have recovered while two patients with pre-existing medical conditions are currently receiving intensive care in hospital in a stable condition.

However, since October 17 this year, a total of 12 patients with symptoms of encephalitis have been reported. Nine of these cases are from the Belait District, two from Tutong and one from Brunei-Muara.

To date, six patients have recovered and were discharged home. Two patients who also have other pre-existing medical conditions are currently receiving intensive care in hospital. They are however, in a stable condition.

Following detailed investigations on all patients, only three patients from the Belait District have been confirmed by laboratory tests to have been infected by the JE virus.

HOSPITALS across the country are placed on alert following cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infections that have recently been detected in the Sultanate for the first time.

MoH confirms six more cases of Japanese encephalitis

THE Ministry of Health (MoH) has confirmed six more cases of Japanese encephalitis (JE) infection, bringing the number of reported cases in Brunei Darussalam to nine.

Eight of the nine confirmed cases of the disease were reported in the Belait District, while there was one reported case in the Brunei-Muara District.

?From the nine cases, five (patients) have recovered and (been) discharged while four are still receiving treatment at hospital, including two in the Intensive Care Unit,? the statement said.
It added that JE infection had never been previously detected in the country.

As a preventive measure for Japanese Encephalitis (JE) infection, the Ministry of Health will be providing immunization service for JE in stages in Belait district, prioritizing in the areas where clusters of cases (hotspots) have been identified, particularly in Mukim Kuala Belait and Mukim Sungai Liang, according to a press release on Friday.

The Ministry of Health has confirmed that six additional cases of JE infection have been confirmed through laboratory tests. This has brought the total of confirmed cases to 15 cases which 14 cases in the Belait District and one case in the Brunei-Muara District. From the 15 cases, 12 have recovered and discharged home whilst three are still receiving intensive care treatment in the hospital. Clinical investigations have shown that these patients are also suffering from a number of chronic diseases.

To control the risk of more serious complications among children, priority is being given to children aged nine months to 15 years. The vaccine should not be given to infants under the age of nine months.
