By Azlan Othman

Hand, foot and mouth disease (HFMD) cases in Brunei were low with only 24 cases recorded until April 27, 43 in March, 32 in February and 23 cases in January, the Ministry of Health said in a statement released yesterday.

Out of 24 cases detected so far this month, only two HFMD cases required treatment at the hospital ward due to fever while the rest received outpatient treatment.

The ministry said the cases were lower than in the same period last year (2007) where 43 cases were recorded in April, 117 in March, 113 in February and 46 cases in January.

The ministry added surveillance on HFMD was conducted since 1999 and intensified from 2003 until today.

However in wake of the recent outbreak of HFMD in Singapore, the Ministry of Health advised the public to always maintain self-cleanliness and continue to take preventive steps against.

The steps include practicing self-cleanliness like washing hands with soap and clean water after visiting the rest room, before preparing food, after changing diapers and when doing household works.

The public are urged to keep their infected children away from crowded places like supermarkets, shopping complexes, swimming pools and so on.

Children who develop HFMD symptoms are advised not to go to school to prevent infecting other children. The siblings of the infected child are also urged not to play together until the child recovers.

The ministry also advised the public, particularly parents, to bring their children to hospital should they develop symptoms and show serious complications such as weakness, loss of appetite, vomiting, paleness, sudden movement, fever with body temperature of 38 degrees or more, fast breathing and strong heart beat.

The ministry continues to intensify the surveillance, prevention and efforts to control HFMD.
