Visitor restrictions are in place at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital and Victoria General due to a Norovirus outbreak.
The Vancouver Island Health Authority warns this is the peak season for the highly infectious virus which causes vomiting and diarrhea.
It is often associated with hospitals, but it circulates in the community, spreads rapidly through families and institutions and is brought into public facilities.

The Norovirus outbreak at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital appears to be winding down.
Only two patients with symptoms remain in hospital. The outbreak, which was declared Dec. 27 on the floor four, has affected 10 patients so far and nine staff members also reported symptoms.

A Norwalk-like illness has put nine patients in isolation at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. Norovirus was confirmed through laboratory tests after a weekend jump in reports of gastrointestinal illness at NRGH.
Infected patients are being kept on the fifth floor. Signs warn visitors to maintain safe practices to avoid spreading germs that transmit the virulent disease, sometimes known by the misnomer stomach flu.
